The Bad Sanitation Caused the Infestation

Due to the poor sanitation throughout the restaurant (grease all over the walls, food & other debris piled underneath the equipment, floor drains clogged with grease & other food items) both red-eyed fruit flies & drain flies began festering throughout the business.

Drain Flies & Red-Eyed Fruit Flies

Drain flies are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats. The key identifying trait for this fly is the unique pattern of veins in its wings. These pests feed off and lay their eggs in the accumulated "muck" (organic debris) that can coat drains if not periodically cleaned. Red-eyed fruit flies are attracted to ripened fruits and vegetables in the kitchen or wherever food is allowed to rot and ferment. They are about 1/8 inch long, are usually yellow and brown in color, have black rings around their abdomen, and have red eyes.

We showed the manager and the staff these problem areas and suggested a few simple sanitation procedures to clean the drains and keep them clean. We were VERY happy that the staff started to clean these problem areas. We started to apply a liquid application in all the floor drains that will remove the bad bacteria that the fruit & drain flies breed in. Removing the breeding habitat will resolve the current infestation. Next, we scrubbed out each one of the drains with our heavy-duty scrubbing brush. Afterward, we applied a bio-foam solution that removes the organic build-up, odors, and scum in all the drains

Next Step in the Treatment Process

Once we finished, we then treated all the high infestation areas with a fly bait to control the adult fruit flies & drain flies and then installed several fruit fly traps. The attractant in the traps draws the fruit flies close and the bait inside the traps exterminates them within moments of contact. In a short amount of time, both of these insects will be exterminated and, as long as the restaurant is properly cleaned on a regular basis, the fruit flies & drain flies will be gone for good.
