These nuisance birds were defecating all over the stairwell of this college football stadium in Piscataway, NJ, and the owner was sick and tired of it! So he called Bird Solutions by Cowleys for help!

First, we carefully removed all the nesting debris. Afterward, we disinfected the area with a solution that targets bird mites. Bird mites are parasites that feed on the blood of birds. Bird mites are the main reason why extreme care is needed when removing a nest. Next, to properly exclude the birds from the stairwell, we installed bird netting. In order make sure the bird netting is secured, we used a stainless steel cable with net spikes and anchored it into the walls. We then locked the cables in place using copper ferrules and then installed turnbuckles which tighten the cable. We also used hog rings which secures the cable and connects it to the bird netting.

This is 3/4 inch, heavy duty polyethylene bird netting is used to humanely block the nuisance birds from entering any unwanted areas. It creates an impenetrable barrier that denies all nuisance birds the access to this area. Doing this removes the landing areas for the nuisance birds. They'll fly around, realize they can't enter, and move on. Another bonus is that the bird netting is almost invisible, unless you take a real close look at it. Now nuisance birds will no longer roost in the stairwell!

A commercial facility in Piscataway used extensively by the public was having issues with pigeons nesting on a ledge above its elevators. The pigeons were causing problems because of their prodigious droppings in an enclosed area. Pigeons are one of the most common nuisance birds that we deal with regularly. Unfortunately, pigeons have no fear of being in close proximity to people, and their populations have exploded  in cities and other high density areas where they enjoy  a virtually unlimited food supply. Unfortunately, nuisance birds are like bad evicted tenants. They shuffle from building to building, and when they are “evicted” from one location with deterrent devices, they become someone else’s problem.

The situation here was unacceptable. Having pigeons circulating around in such an enclosed area was visually unappealing, noisy, bad smelling, as well as a potential health hazard from their toxic droppings. Something needed to be done, and done fast! A crew from Bird Solutions By Cowleys was called out to keep these nuisance birds from perching in the elevator area.

BirdSlide completely protects ledges against pigeons, swallows, and all other nuisance birds. It’s called BirdSlide for good reason. These angled barriers completely block ledges. Birds can’t grip them, and they slide right off. Birds, unlike kids, don’t find slides much fun. After trying to land a few times unsuccessfully, they get frustrated and look for another less hostile location.

BirdSlide works on any overhang-type structure where pigeons and other birds tend to congregate including ledges, eaves, angle irons, I-Beams, and most L-shaped ledges. Made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate, this deterrent is long-lasting and, best of all, it’s  unobtrusive. After it is installed, it look like it’s part of the building. BirdSlide can even be color-matched to the building, if necessary for aesthetic reasons, in areas of high visibility. The product comes in grey or beige, but can be painted to match any color.

The owner of this commercial building in Piscataway, NJ received several complains from his workers about pigeons roosting in the Rooftop HVAC systems and defecating all over the place. Frustrated, he called Bird Solutions by Cowleys and we were sent out. When we inspected the HVAC systems, we found large amounts of bird droppings, nesting debris, and feathers throughout the areas. This isn’t only a health hazard to everyone inside the building, but this also presents a slip, trip, fall hazard to the workers.

In order to exclude the pigeons from these areas, we installed bird netting over the top and underneath the HVAC systems. In order make sure the bird netting is secured, we used a stainless steel cable with net spikes and anchored it into the walls. We then locked the cables in place using copper ferrules and then installed turnbuckles which tighten the cable.

Bird Netting is a 3/4 inch, heavy duty polyethylene net that is used to humanely block the pigeons as well as all nuisance birds from entering the HVAC systems. It creates an impenetrable barrier that denies all nuisance birds the access to this area and removes their landing areas.

They’ll fly around, realize they can't enter, and move on. The bottom portion of the bird netting is weighted, so that the maintenance team an have easy access to the roof. Another bonus is that the bird netting is almost invisible, unless you take a real close look. Now the rooftop HVAC systems are properly excluded from all nuisance birds.

Job Stories From Piscataway, NJ
Mice find easy access through basement window - Mouse removal in Piscataway, NJ

Today, I performed the initial home protection service for a home in Piscataway. Upon arrival, I asked what types of infestation problems the homeowner had encountered in the past, and what ongoing problems they’ve been having. The homeowner told me that they have had occasional mouse activity, especially as temperatures drop and the mice are looking to get indoors to escape the cold.

Mice require only very small entry points to gain access into a home. The general rule of thumb is that if a mouse is able to poke its head through a hole or gap, the rest of their body will follow. Because mice have no collarbone, they are able to squeeze through a hole about the size of a dime. Needless to say, finding all of the potential access points for mice is a challenge and requires a thorough methodical inspection of the home’s exterior perimeter. Commonly overlooked entry points include those small hardly noticeable construction gaps in the foundation, gaps around utility lines entering the home, and under garage doors that do not completely seal when shut. Mice are also excellent climbers and can even enter through construction openings in the roof to gain access into the attic.

Because mice commonly enter and ground level and this home had a basement, I conducted a careful inspection of this area, and observed mouse droppings on the sill plates. I placed some bait boxes and snap traps on the sill plates to capture any mice that still may be lurking around in the house. More often than not, because mice are nocturnal and do their foraging at night, homeowners will usually stumble across evidence of mouse activity, such as droppings or nesting materials or even smell a rotting mouse carcass, before seeing live mice. still in the house. Mice often wind up in the kitchen area to forage for food, often maneuvering around the house entering and exiting through wall voids. So, as part of my inspection, I checked under the kitchen sink and behind the oven and refrigerator to check for droppings. Fortunately, there were no indications that mice had invaded the kitchen.

Next, I focused on the exterior inspection, which is critical for stopping ongoing mice problems. The objective during these inspections is to find and close any potential entry points. Overall, this home was well sealed, although I did find some openings in the basement window frames that would have allowed easy access for mice to enter the basement. I sealed openings in each of the four basement windows. While it is next to impossible to make a home completely impermeable to mouse entry given their size and the number of potential access points, sealing these openings will go a long way in stopping future mouse infestations in this home. I told the homeowner to not hesitate to call us if he finds more droppings or other evidence of mouse activity. Unfortunately, a mouse infestation may require follow-up visits before it is completely resolved.
