Dirty drains invite pests in Somerville, NJ

Dirty drains invite pests in Somerville, NJ

Dirty drains invite pests in Somerville, NJ Dirty drains invite pests in Somerville, NJ

While servicing on one of Cowleys commercial accounts in Somerville, NJ, I noticed that some of the floor drains were quite dirty with accumulated organic matter on the walls of the drains. This “gunk” can easily become a breeding ground for fruit flies, drain flies, and other small gnats.

To treat these potential breeding areas, we use a bio-foam, a bioenzymatic cleaner that continuously breaks down the decaying organic matter, removing a choice breeding habitat for these pests. I applied this product generously to the basket, pipes, and anywhere else that build-up was evident. Going forward, I recommended a stringent cleaning program to prevent this from re-occurring. Often, especially with restaurants, the source of the pest problem is hidden food debris, whether behind appliances or inside drains. A commercial kitchen may superficially look spotless, but once you start doing some digging, you realize that there are many food sources allowing these pests to survive and thrive. Instituting and enforcing sanitation and hygiene protocols can make all the difference.

Recently, I was sent out on a service call to one of the condominium complexes we service in Somerville, NJ for a mice problem. When I arrived, I inspected the interior of the home and found mice droppings in the laundry room and office. I then inspected the exterior of the unit and, within minutes, I was able to find the entry point! There was a giant gap where the utility wires were leading into the home.

I carefully cleaned up all the droppings inside the home, stuffed all the openings with chew-proof stainless steel mesh, and then sealed them in place with a premium, waterproof adhesive. Lastly, I placed several Ready-to-Use rodent bait stations throughout the interior and along the exterior of the building. I'll return for several follow-up visits to monitor the rodent infestation and replenish the bait stations as needed.

Job Stories From Somerville, NJ
Raccoon Rips Its Way Into Home in Somerville, NJ

After hearing some odd noises in his attic late at night and thinking he might have a critter up there, this customer in Somerville, NJ contacted Little Rascals Nuisance Wildlife Division and we were sent out. As we thoroughly inspected the exterior of the home, we noticed some damage near the soffit return. When we took a closer look, we discovered several raccoon paw prints leading up to the access point. Looks like the customer has a raccoon in his attic.

To safely retrieve the raccoon, we installed a positive set over the main access point and set up several baited devices nearby. A positive set is a device that's comprised of a nose cone that is attached to a two-gaited, heavy-duty device. The nose cone will guide the raccoon safely into the heavy-duty device. It's called a positive set, because we are positive that the raccoon will enter it! Once we retrieve the raccoon, we will take it to a new humane location, disinfect the attic, and install sturdy metal flashing over the access point.

A Whole Lot of Drain Flies in Somerville, NJ

This restaurant in Somerville, NJ had a severe drain fly infestation throughout their kitchen. What was the underlying issue that caused the infestation? Poor sanitation! As we inspected the restaurant, we noticed that almost every single one of the floor drains were clogged, overflowing with water & debris, and full of drain flies and their larvae! Drain flies are small, dark-winged, non-biting gnats that thrive in drains because of the fats, oils, and greases that go down every drain. The drain flies use this buildup as a food source, breeding ground, and habitat all in one. As long as there are fats, oils, and greases in the drain, drain flies will continue multiplying.

We spoke to the owner and mentioned that if these sanitation issues aren't addressed and handled ASAP then he could experience other pest infestations in his business, like cockroaches, rodents, or fruit flies. Thankfully, he agreed, spoke with his staff, and instituted a new cleaning protocol. In the meantime, we applied a liquid application in all the floor drains and then scrubbed them out. This treatment is going to eliminate the bad bacteria inside the drains that the drain flies breed in. Once that's eliminated, so will the drain flies. After that, we applied a bio-foam solution in all of the floor drains. This is going to remove all of the organic build-up, odors, and scum inside the drains as well as eliminate the drain flies and their larvae. Once we finished, we set up a number of pheromone traps and scheduled several return visits to keep an eye on the drain fly infestation and, if necessary, apply some additional treatments.

Opossum Eating the Dog Food in Somerville, NJ

This homeowner in Somerville, NJ, was in his garage, organizing his holiday lights one day, when he noticed an opossum walk right into his garage and began eating his pets food! He quietly went inside and contacted Little Rascals for help! Opossums are a medium sized mammal that usually range in weight from four to six pounds. They're omnivores & are known to eat vertebrates (mice and rats especially), invertebrates, carrion (dead animals), plants, fruits, grains, and human garbage. Opossums are drawn to places that have both food and water, which is why leaving food and water out for an outdoor pet will often attract opossums at any time of the year!

Once we arrived, we spotted the opossum snacking on the pet food that was placed in the garage. We carefully and successfully retrieved it and relocated the opossum to a new, humane environment. Before we left, we advised the owner to clean up the spilled food, no longer keep the pet food in the garage, and to remove the pet food once his cat is done eating. Doing this few simple tricks will prevent opossums, and other nuisance wildlife, from infesting his home.

Found a Mice Entry Point in Somerville, NJ

As we were servicing this property in Somerville, NJ we found an opening made by mice on the side of the foundation. How did we know it was mice? We found their droppings around the hole and found their hair inside it. Mice infesting your home is never a good thing as they are known to carry many diseases. These diseases can then spread to people through directly handling their feces or breathing it through the air!

We brought this to the homeowners attention and he mentioned that he will contact a foundation repair specialist to repair the hole. In the meantime, we carefully vacuumed up the droppings and installed several rodent bait stations near the hole and around the perimeter of the home. We will return for several follow-up visits to replenish the bait stations and monitor the infestation.
