What Damage Do Stink Bugs Cause New Jersey Homes?

tomatoesStink bugs are responsible for significant crop damage in Japan and the agricultural industry in New Jersey and Pennsylvania is already on alert. According to the Rutgers Agricultural Cooperative Extension, this pest and has infested many ornamental plants, fruit trees, legumes, and vegetables. They particularly enjoy honeydew, tomatoes, beans, corn, squash, peppers, cabbage, and any type of fruit. The BMSB is a sucking insect, a true bug, using its proboscis (beak) to pierce and suck plant juice. For those with backyard gardens, these bugs can cause major damage. This feeding causes small, necrotic areas on the outer surface of fruits and can result in seed loss and the transmission of plant pathogens.

The stink bug is exclusively a plant feeder and will not bite humans or pests. However, once inside a home or building, they can become a nuisance and emit an offensive odor if disturbed or crushed. It seems that at least a few of these bugs have found their way into almost every home in New Jersey.
