Cowleys Pest Services

Title: Co-Owner

Bill Cowley from Cowleys Pest Services

Bill has been working side-by-side with his brother Drew for nearly three decades transforming Cowleys into one of Monmouth and Ocean County’s largest full-service pest control companies with 35 full-time staff and more than 10,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

Bill's brother Drew operated Cowleys as a sole proprietorship for its first five years. When Bill came on board in 1996, the growth and trajectory of the company forever changed. Although today’s Cowleys is a far cry from its humble beginnings, the company’s underlying values remain the same. Cowleys believes that a company can only achieve long-term success if it adheres to the highest ethical standards and operates as a cohesive team with a customer-first philosophy. Customers and employees alike must be treated well. Every pest infestation, every bird and wildlife project, every crawl space encapsulation, and every mold bioremediation project must be completed expeditiously and done right. Exceeding customer expectations must be the norm, not the exception.

Through Bill’s substantial business experience, he worked hard to implement his vision of building a pest control services that offers a comprehensive array of often interrelated services.  Cowleys core business is and will always be pest control services. However, today it also offers a cluster of related services with one objective in mind: to promote a healthy living environment for families and occupants of homes and businesses. This means living environments that are pest-free, mold-free, and are circulating with crisp, clean indoor air. To prevent pest infestations and dangerous mold growth, homes and businesses require dry, clean basements and crawl spaces.  Bill has worked diligently to create a multi-division company that includes crawl space encapsulation, pest control insulation, mold treatment services, and other property protection services.

From the time Drew founded business in November 1991, sales went from nothing in 1991 to $120,000 in 1996. It was a major accomplishment for Drew to even survive in this highly competitive field. But that was only the beginning. The Drew-Bill business partnership proved to be unstoppable. Leveraging each other’s strengths, over the next two decades, Cowleys was transformed from Drew and his truck into one of central New Jersey's largest full-service pest control companies servicing over 10,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Sales skyrocketed. But even beyond the sales numbers, Drew and Bill are especially proud of building a company that now provides full-time employment to nearly thirty technicians and administrative staff.

So, this is the Cowleys story: Two hard-working brothers who worked together to build an amazing business. The operative word is partnership. Neither brother believes that they could have done this all by themselves. Cowleys is and will continue to be a joint effort. Cowleys Pest Services is a living lesson in synergy – creating a whole bigger and better than the sum of its parts.

Messy & Unorganized Crawl Space Gets Encapsulated in Princeton Junction, NJ

This homeowner in Princeton Junction, NJ, wanted his crawl space encapsulated, so he called Cowleys and we were sent out to perform the job.

Once we entered the crawl space we removed all the contaminated insulation and debris, leveled the ground for proper draining, and installed a drainage matting. This material is a dimpled plastic mat that allows all excess moisture to work its way over the sump pump. Once we finished, we installed a vapor barrier which is a heavy-duty, 20-mil 7-ply sandwich of high and low-density polyethylene with a polyester-cord reinforcement. It cannot tear and is extremely durable. The vapor barrier is also treated with an antimicrobial to prevent mold and is installed over the foundation walls and floor to create a continuous air and moisture barrier.

Next, we installed SilverGlo™, which is a waterproof foam insulation that seals the walls from outside moisture and humidity, to the walls of the crawl space. Lastly, we installed a Sani-Dry Sedona commercial-grade dehumidifier to control the humidity levels. The Sedona directs the extracted water pulled out of the air directly into the sump pump. Now the homeowner has a transformed crawl space that is clean and dry and can be utilized for additional storage space.

After our wildlife team had safely removed all the squirrels out from this attic, we're here to remove the contaminated insulation and add TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation. The squirrels were present in the attic for such a long time that the insulation was soaked with their urine and their feces were everywhere!

So we carefully removed all the contaminated insulation and then vacuumed and disinfected the attic. Next, we added TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation, which will fill the attic to its recommended insulation levels. TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation has a higher R-value than standard fiberglass insulation, has the highest Class-1 fire safety rating, is resistant to mold and pests, and is eco-friendly!

Bats Ruin Insulation, We Add New Blown-in Insulation in Beachwood, NJ

These Beachwood, NJ homeowners had a colony, or cloud, of bats nesting in their attic for quite a while. Although there was no longer an active bat infestation, the bats left behind a toxic mess of guano (bat droppings).

We removed all the contaminated insulation and added approximately 10" of fresh new TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation. TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation has a higher R-value than standard fiberglass insulation, has the highest Class-1 fire safety rating, is resistant to mold and pests, and is eco-friendly! Not to mention, heating and cooling systems of a home have to work double-time to replace lost air during temperature fluctuations when insulation isn't present. The result is almost always going to be an expensive energy bill. Blown-in cellulose insulation maximizes home comfort and optimizes energy usage for year-round peace and savings.

Crawl Space Repair in Toms River, NJ

This Toms River, NJ home had a dirt floor crawl space that was poorly insulated, was likely to attract pests and insects, and (in its current state) allowed for the spread of mold and mildew due to the high humidity levels.

First, we removed all the contaminated insulation and debris, leveled the ground for proper draining, and installed a drainage matting and a vapor barrier. The vapor barrier is a heavy-duty, 20-mil 7-ply sandwich of high and low-density polyethylene with a polyester-cord reinforcement. It cannot tear and is extremely durable. Dirt floor crawl spaces attract and absorb moisture and once the dirt dries, it causes humidity levels to rise and can lead to mold problems.

To correct this, we installed Sani-Dry Sedona dehumidifier to control the humidity levels in the crawl space and a Smart Drain. The Smart Drain prevents any moisture from sitting on top of the vapor barrier. The vapor barrier is also treated with an antimicrobial to prevent mold and is installed over the foundation walls and floor to create a continuous air and moisture barrier. Now the homeowner has a transformed crawl space that is clean and dry.

Mice Soil Attic Insulation, We Remove & Reinsulate in Toms River, NJ

A homeowner in Toms River, NJ had a mouse infestation in his attic. One of our pest control technicians quickly & efficiently resolved the infestation, and all potential entry points were properly sealed. However, mice were not the only problem. The insulation was not only torn and shredded but was saturated with urine and droppings. When the pellets dry, microscopic spores are then released into the air, which is a health hazard for the home’s occupants. The urine odors are often so strong that they permeate through the entire house.

First, we carefully removed all the contaminated insulation and then vacuumed and disinfected the attic.

Under Insulated Attic in East Brunswick, NJ

We went out on a service call for a homeowner in East Brunswick, NJ who was having an issue with poor ventilation in his attic. About 50% of energy costs can be traced to HVAC usage, meaning heating and cooling are one of the biggest expenses for many homeowners. Air leaks between the attic and the rest of the home or outside, insufficient insulation, and poor ventilation are some of the factors that significantly influence your home's energy efficiency, comfort, and costs.

Once we arrived and conducted a thorough inspection, we determined that his attic was severely under-insulated. After bringing this to the homeowner's attention and discussing a few options, he decided to add blown-in cellulose insulation in his attic. Blown-in cellulose insulation is the perfect choice for reinforcing the barrier between your home's attic and other rooms. Insulation limits heat transfer, meaning it prevents heat from escaping during the winter and prevents humidity from entering the home during the summer. Improper installation of light fixtures in the attic can create void areas of missing insulation. Insulation voids allow heat transfer by convection and radiation. Research has shown that just a 4% void in fiberglass batt insulation can result in a 50% reduction in insulation effectiveness.

We added approximately 10 inches of cellulose to their existing insulation in the attic. Now the home has an extra layer of insulation to prevent heat loss.

Previously, we conducted a thorough inspection of a homeowners attic in Howell, NJ and reached the conclusion that it was under-insulated. We brought this to the homeowner's attention and, after thinking about for a little while, wanted Cowleys to add cellulose blown-in insulation in his attic.

Blown-in cellulose insulation is used to fill the attic to the recommended insulation levels. The blanket of insulation will create a thermal barrier and help keep the home more comfortable and efficient. Cellulose also has higher R-value than other insulation and instantly improves home energy performance. Our cellulose insulation is treated with non-toxic borate, giving it the highest Class-1 fire safety rating and creating incredible resistance to mold and pests. Not only does cellulose insulation efficiently optimize energy-usage, but it is made primarily from recycled newspaper, making it the perfect choice for environmentally conscious property owners.

Once we arrived, we re-inspected the attic and then began adding approximately 10 inches of blown-in cellulose insulation. Now the home has an extra layer of insulation to prevent against heat loss.

These homeowners in South Plainfield, NJ had a squirrel infestation in their attic. Fortunately, our Little Rascals team safely retrieved the squirrels, relocated them to a new, humane environment, and properly sealed up their entry point. However, as often happens, the squirrels made a mess of the attic. There were toxic droppings throughout the attic. When these droppings dry out or are otherwise disturbed, particles can become airborne and circulate throughout the home. If breathed in, these microscopic spores can trigger serious respiratory diseases. In addition, as often happens, the sponge-like attic insulation becomes contaminated from animal waste.

So we removed all the old & contaminated insulation and then disinfected the attic. Once we finished, we added TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation! TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation has a higher R-value than standard fiberglass insulation, has the highest Class-1 fire safety rating, is resistant to mold and pests, and is eco-friendly!

Additional Attic Insulation Added in Allenwood, NJ

These homeowners in Allenwood, NJ had recently purchased their home and wanted to better insulate their attic. Good attic insulation slows the rate of heat transfer. It is important both in the summer and winter. During the winter, attic insulation helps stop the flow of heat out of the home, and during the summer, it shows the movement of heat into the home. This not only makes the home more comfortable but also helps your HVAC system work more efficiently and effectively, saving substantial money on your utility bills. Insulation is one of those home investments that easily pays for itself over time.

There was nothing wrong with this home’s existing insulation. The problem was that there just wasn’t enough of it. Cowleys had the perfect solution: We came in and installed a 5" cap of our TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation right on top of their existing insulation. This insulation offers superior thermal properties as well as a proven method of pest control.

It wasn't until we went outside and found ants trailing from her garbage cans into the kitchen. The homeowner immediately started to clean out hr garbage cans and move them away from her home.

In the meantime, we applied a gel bait to the ant trails on the kitchen counter and treated the baseboards, cracks, and crevices in the kitchen and the two adjacent rooms with a liquid non-repellent. Afterward, we went outside and applied a granular bait to the grassy areas and then treated the entire exterior with a liquid residual. The ants will bring any of these treatments back to their nest and share them throughout their colony.  A short while later, the ants are extreminated.
