Stink bugs invade home in Avenel, NJ

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha hayls) is a bane to many homeowners and commercial establishments. This is the time of the year when the night temperatures get cooler that these nuisance pests strive to enter a structure to overwinter, as you can see in this video of a home in Avenel, NJ. They don't bite, they don't eat or breed indoors. They are just trying to survive. These insects native to China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan were  most likely accidentally introduced into eastern Pennsylvania. They enter structures through gaps around windows and doors, under loose siding and soffit areas. There is no known predator for these pests, whose defense is their scent gland which gives off an unpleasant odor. This is why they got the name "stink bug." 

Although it is nearly impossible to eliminate these pests completely, their population can be greatly reduced indoors be sealing gaps around doors and windows, and applying a repellent product around the structures that are being infested. Cowleys has been treating for these pests for many years. From what a has been observed recently in the last week or so, it looks like there will be a bumper crop of these unwanted invaders this year.
