Why Do Stink Bugs Stink?

Why Do Stink Bugs Stink? - Image 1

Here in New Jersey, when people talk about stink bugs, they are most likely referring to the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (scientifically name Halyomorpha halys). This is a non-native species that has been in New Jersey for just over 25 years. The first reports of stink bugs in New Jersey happened in 1999, a stink bug was found in a black light trap operated by Rutgers Cooperative Extension in Milford. Over the years the stink bug has really taken hold in its new environment and become a real nuisance pest.

Stink bugs can be fairly easy to identify. They have a shield-like, oval-shaped body which is typically 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long. The term "marmorated" in its name refers to its marble-like, brown mottled coloration across the shield. The underside of their shield is usually white or pale tan and occasionally has gray or black marks. Their antennae feature alternating dark and light bands while their legs are brown with faint white banding.

Now that you can identify a stink bug you can be sure not to step on one if it gets inside your house because stink bugs really do live up to their moniker. If you do accidentally step on one you will quickly notice a pungent and unpleasant odor that people often describe as a mix between cilantro and burnt rubber. Other people compare it to the smell of a skunk. While some may disagree with exactly what a stink bug smells like, you will be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks it smells pleasant.

So why do stink bugs smell so bad? The stink bug uses this smell as a defense mechanism against predators. Stink bugs produce a foul smelling chemical in glands located in their thorax. When they feel threatened they can release the chemical. The chemical is also released if pressure is placed on their thorax. The odor is meant to be a warning to potential predators that they will not make a good meal, and it also serves as a warning to other stink bugs that there is danger in the area.

Although arguably not as common as they were a few years ago, stink bugs still are causing problems for people here in New Jersey. If you have ever had stink bugs in your house you know what a nuisance they can be. The best way to deal with stink bugs is prevention. Stop them before they have a chance to come inside.  Using Cowleys can make all the difference!

When it comes to stink bugs, this is exactly when prevention measures should start. The most effective time for barrier applications is when the bugs start to seek shelter due to decreasing temperatures. It varies from year to year, but the most common time for this to happen here in New Jersey is late August through October.
