Bed Bugs Found on Box-spring in Toms River, NJ

Of all the pests that we deal with, bed bugs are among the most upsetting and anxiety-causing infestations. It’s bad enough to have bugs, but bed bugs take it to the next level. These  parasites use us as hosts for their blood meals. In fact, our blood is all they live on. For me, there’s no better feeling that locating any pesky bed bugs that have become a living nightmare for the poor victim of a bed bug infestation.

When this homeowner who resided in Toms River, NJ she was exhausted and exasperated. As soon as I met her, there was no question that she was at the end of her rope. She had lost five consecutive nights of restful sleep, and it showed. She explained that she was especially frustrated because she knew that she was being bitten in her bed, but she could not find the source of these mysterious bites. This is all too common with bed bugs. These insects will patiently hide and wait until their host is resting or sleeping to feed — they don’t like moving targets when feeding!

I was determined to resolve this insect issue, whatever it may be — and this one had all the signs of a bed bug problem. With my flashlight in hand, the homeowner led me into her bedroom where she was certain that she was being bitten. I slowly removed the bed linens so I would not disturb any bugs. I wanted them left right on the mattress or boxspring where I could find them. The bedsheets appeared to be completely clean of any pest activity. Sometimes, with a bed bug infestation, I’ll find tell-tale tiny blood or fecal stains on the sheets. I carefully lifted the mattress off the boxspring to inspect underneath. Good bed bug technicians have an eye for detail and are able to catch the smallest, subtle signs of bed bug activity. I immediately saw a lone bed bug nesting along the seam of the boxspring. Furniture seams are is a favorite hiding spot for bed bugs because they love tight spots. The seams put pressure on multiple sides off their bodies all at once, making them feel safe and secure. This bed bug happened to have had a blood meal recently and was fully engorged with blood — no doubt, the blood of this homeowner!

Although no one likes hearing that they have bed bugs, the homeowner was pleased that the problem was identified and the infestation could now be treated. She told me she was a bit embarrassed to ask for help since she could not find a single sign of bed bug activity anywhere. I told her that if someone is being bitten consistently at night and he or she can’t figure out the source of the bites that alone is more enough reason to call a pest control service for a bed bug inspection. She did exactly the right thing by contacting Cowleys.  Now that the bed bug problem was confirmed, the homeowner asked to start treatment immediately and get these nasty bugs out of her home. Of course, I was happy to oblige!
