Dirt Is Not The Issue Regarding Cockroaches

Dirt Is Not The Issue Regarding Cockroaches - Image 1

What is one of the worst things a person can say about an overnight establishment? They can call it a roach motel! Why is this such an insult? Because as soon as a person hears the word roach they automatically think dirty and unkempt. This may be one of the reasons that people actually feel shame if they have a cockroach problem. This feeling of shame may even lead them to refuse to call in a professional and instead try to take care of the problem themselves. Don’t let this happen! Roach problems can be particularly difficult to control with DIY measures. Instead, if there is a problem, give Cowleys a call, but before you have a problem take these steps to keep roaches at bay.

Although roaches are believed by many to only live in filthy places, they can in fact live in very clean places. The most important requirement for roaches to thrive is a warm, humid environment. As the temperatures increase this spring, a warm, humid environment could be describing your home. So what do you do to lessen your chance of having roaches? Try to control the humidity and moisture in your home. It is always a good idea to check under your kitchen and bathroom sinks for any leaks. A warm, dark, under-sink cabinet with consistent moisture is heaven for a roach.

Although Fido will surely disagree, only having pet food out during meal time helps decreases the likelihood of roaches. Cockroaches need food, and an open food bowl left out all the time is an excellent place for a roach to find nourishment. Human food left out can also be a problem. Displays of cookies or trays of nuts may look nice on your counter, but if you are not actually eating them, they should be in a tightly sealed container.

Although you should feel no shame at having a cockroach problem, that does not mean that you should let it go. In fact, getting rid of the cockroaches promptly should be one of your top priorities. Roaches may be small, but they are dangerous. They are not known to bite, but a cockroach poses a serious health threat just the same. Cockroaches have been implicated in the spread of 33 types of bacteria, 6 parasitic worms, and at least 7 other types of human pathogens. Some of the diseases they spread are serious health threats like Salmonella and E. coli. Touching a surface that has been walked on by a disease carrying roach can get you infected with that disease. Roaches can also trigger allergy and asthma attacks because their shed skin, saliva, and droppings all contain a potent allergen.

Keep your humidity levels in check, keep your food in well-sealed containers, and remember that DIY roach control measures rarely have the outcome you want. Working with Cowleys can mean eradicating the roaches in your house quickly and safely, making your house healthier for you and your family.
