Challenging raccoon trapping job in Kendall Park, NJ

Challenging raccoon trapping job in Kendall Park, NJ Challenging raccoon trapping job in Kendall Park, NJ

Raccoons, although they walk on all fours like most mammals, have human-shaped paws with thumbs, not to mention razor-sharp claws. Because of their anatomy, these animals are amazingly good climbers. They are able to climb and walk on a much steeper roofs than we can. Unless you are a skilled rock climber, most of us regular folks have limited grip strength relative to our body weight, and none of us have a nice set of claws to dig into materials.

This wildlife job for a homeowner in Kendall Park, NJ was particularly tricky, and it took some extra planning because of this home’s steep pitched roof. To make matters even more challenging, there wasn’t much  space between the house, and the ladder angle was a bit steeper than I would have liked. To solidly secure the ladder, I was able to ”foot” it right up against the bottom of the fence, so it would not "kick out" while I was on it.

Buttressed by the fence, this ladder would not budge on inch, and I had plenty of of security to work with my hands off the ladder without worrying about whether it would move while I was on it. I installed a “positive” set up. With this type of set up, any animal has no choice but to go through the trap, no matter if it's coming or going from the home.

The raccoon was soon trapped, and I safely relocated him far away from any human habitats. After trapping the trespasser, I closed off the access into the home in order to prevent any further wildlife intrusions. All in all, this was a satisfying job with a great resolution and a very happy homeowner who could now enjoy his home without sharing it with a destructive raccoon!

Squirrels Chew Apart Hole in the Roof & We Fix It in Kendall Park, NJ Squirrels Chew Apart Hole in the Roof & We Fix It in Kendall Park, NJ

This homeowner in Kendall Park, NJ had squirrels living in his attic and even damaged a portion of his roof by chewing a hole in it! Previously, we safely retrieved all the squirrels from the home and relocated them to a new, humane environment. After disinfecting the area, we began to repair the damage.

First, we cut a piece of sturdy metal flashing and installed it over the opening. Next, we applied roof grit to the flashing to blend it in with the color of the roof. Afterward, we applied a premium adhesive to the area and spread it across the flashing in order to hold the roof grits in place. Now the roof is repaired and good as new!

Job Stories From Kendall Park, NJ
Checking Up on Our Fly Traps in Kendall Park, NJ

We're returning to this commercial property in Kendall Park, NJ, to check on the fruit fly activity in the kitchen. Previously, we had installed several fly traps throughout the area. As you can see from the photos, they worked like a charm! What happens is the attractant in the traps draws the fruit flies close and the bait inside the traps exterminates them within moments of contact.

All that's left is to replace all the fly traps with new ones and schedule several additional follow up inspections. Once we leave, the housekeeping staff is going to clean up and disinfect the entire business, so that the fruit fly issue doesn't happen again.

Squirrels Use the Gable Vent to Infest the Attic in Kendall Park, NJ

A new customer in Kendall Park, NJ, contacted our Nuisance Wildlife division after he had found a squirrel running around his attic! Once we arrived and inspected the exterior of the home, to determine how the squirrels were getting in, we noticed that the gable vent appeared to be damaged. As we took a closer look, we determined that the squirrel was the one that damaged the gable vent and utilized that area to infest the home! Nuisance wildlife infesting a home via the gable vents is very common. Over time, the gable vents get weathered and squirrels, raccoons, birds, and bats have no problem ripping away these vents to find shelter inside a home.

In order to safely retrieve the squirrel, we installed a one-way device over the gable vent and then temporarily enclosed it with hardware cloth. We also set up several baited devices nearby. The one-way is designed to allow the squirrel to safely leave the area but prevent it from getting back in. In a short amount of time we successfully retrieved the squirrel and relocated it to a new, humane location.

Afterward, we removed the broken gable vent, disinfected the attic, and went back to our trucks to fashion a louvered gable vent. This material is made out of heavy-duty Galvannealed steel (which means it won't rust) and is customized to accommodate vents of all shapes and sizes! Now the gable vent is properly protected from squirrels as well as all nuisance wildlife!

Up High is a Bald-Faced Hornets Nest in Kendall Park, NJ

As this homeowner in Kendall Park, NJ was mowing his lawn, he kept hearing buzzing noises around his head, but just dismissed them as he thought they were just mosquitoes. It wasn't until he got stung several times is when he realized that he was getting attacked by several hornets! He quickly ran inside and called our Pest Control Division for help. Once we arrived and examined these stinging insects, we quickly identified them as bald-faced hornets

Bald-faced hornets are social stinging insects that are a close relative to yellow jackets. The surface of their upper midsection almost looks triangular from the side, and they have white markings on their face. They build paper nests at least three or more feet off of the ground, usually in trees, shrubs, overhangs, houses, or other structures. One very important fact that you must know about bald-faced hornets is that they are EXTREMELY aggressive and will not hesitate to sting anything that invades their space.

For treatment, we injected a knockdown aerosol application directly into the opening of the nest. This treatment rapidly exterminates the bald-faced hornets. After they were eliminated we removed the nest, and the branch it was attached to, and properly disposed of them.

Carpenter Bees Boring Under the Fascia in Kendall Park, NJ

This customer in Kendall Park, NJ called our Pest Control Division after noticing a large number of "fat bees" flying around his fascia board. Once we arrived and took a closer look at them, we identified them as carpenter beesCarpenter bees are solitary, wood-destroying pests but they don’t eat wood like termites do. Female carpenter bees drill circular ½-inch diameter holes into the wooden areas of a building. While the female creates a tunnel to nest, the male acts as a sentry protecting the female and nest. Those are the ones that dive bomb at you, but can't really do anything since they have no stinger. Aside from the drill holes, one of the most common signs of a carpenter bee infestation is the yellow excrement stains underneath their gallery.

To exterminate them, we injected both a residual dusting product and a residual aerosol application into each gallery. These treatments rapidly eliminates the carpenter bees as well as leaves behind a residual that will eliminate any eggs inside their gallery and any returning carpenter bees.

Multiple Digger Bee Mounds Found Across the Yard in Kendall Park, NJ

As this homeowner in Kendall Park, NJ was getting ready to start prepping her yard for the season, she noticed that there was a large number of bees hovering across her yard. Afraid that she or her children would get stung, she called our office for help. Once we arrived and inspected the area, we quickly identified them as digger bees

Digger bees are solitary, non-social wasps and each hole is a separate, independent nest of digger bees. The females dig these half-inch to one-inch deep burrows to nest and raise young. Although the venom from a digger bee sting is strong enough to cause a severe allergic reaction in some people, they're non-aggressive and usually only sting if they are being stepped on or directly handled. A key indication of a digger bee infestation is the multiple pencil-sized dirt mounds across a lawn.

For treatment, we applied a granular bait across the yard and then soaked every single digger bee mound with a liquid residual. Both of these treatments will rapidly exterminate the digger bees.

Cracks in the Concrete Causes a Mouse Problem in Kendall Park, NJ

While treating a home in Kendall Park, NJ we discovered something interesting   mouse droppings near the back door. As we investigated, we noticed that there was a crack in the concrete that the mice were using to infest the home! We reported what we found to the owner and she mentioned that she will hire someone to repair the crack.

In the meantime, we cleaned up the droppings and installed several rodent bait stations around the exterior and interior of the home. Once we finished, we scheduled several follow up visits to monitor the infestation and replenish the bait in the bait stations.

Box Elder Bugs Get a Tan in Kendall Park, NJ

While servicing a property in Kendall Park, NJ we discovered a massive swarm of box elder bugs on the side of the home. As we inspected, we concluded that they were harboring behind the downspout. During the time of the year when the days are warm and the nights are cooler, boxelder bugs look for sheltered areas where temperatures stay moderate. Large groups of these pests will come together to congregate in areas where the sun hits. When a large mass of these pests gathers, they’ll often migrate to a nearby home to overwinter.

First, we applied a knockdown aerosol product behind the downspout, since that’s where a majority of the box elder bugs were harboring. This product will eliminate these pests almost immediately. Afterward, we treated the box elder bugs and the surrounding area with a liquid residual application. In a short amount of time, they will be exterminated.

Large Yellow Jacket Nest Exterminated in Kendall Park, NJ

During a routine treatment service at this property in Kendall Park, NJ, we discovered a large yellow jackets nest in a tree about 15 feet up.

Yellow jackets are aggressive, territorial wasps, with distinctive yellow-and-black coloration, that are known for their propensity to sting anyone and anything that they perceive as a threat, such as those who venture too close to their nests or their food.

We grabbed our extendable pole, attached an aerosol application to it, and injected the treatment directly into the nest. This product rapidly exterminates the yellow jackets. Once the population diminished, we removed the nest, and the branch it was attached to, and disposed of them properly.

Insect light traps successfully kill flys in Kendall Park Senior Center

Cowleys initiated a fly control program at a senior living community in Kendall Park.  While maintaining sanitation and cleanliness is important to fly control, sometimes a clean facility or kitchen is not enough, and a pest control service needs to be called in for more intensive measures. There is no single fly control program that will work in all cases, and we have a variety of tools to use depending on the circumstances causing the infestation.

For this facility’s fly control program, we felt the problem would be most quickly resolved through installing fly lights, otherwise known as Insect Light Traps (ILTs) (see attached pictures).  These traps use ultraviolet light bulbs to draw flies to a non-toxic sticky board inside. At Cowleys, we not only use these lights to trap these filthy pests, but also to monitor their activity level.

A week after the fly light installation, we could not have ben more pleased with the results. The head of maintenance of the senior living community confirmed that the fly defense program was completely successful. There were no longer any fly issues, and even better for him, no more resident complaints!
