As this elderly homeowner in Monmouth Junction, NJ, was sitting on her back porch, enjoying the beautiful weather, she spotted a wasp nest in the corner of her home. Since she is highly allergic to wasps and is a current Home Protection Plan customer, she immediately called our office for help. When we arrived and took a closer look at these stinging insects, we identified them as paper wasps.

Paper wasps, also called umbrella wasps, are semi-social stinging insects that usually have brown bodies with yellow or reddish markings. They range in size from five-eighths to three-quarters of an inch long and are known for the long legs that extend out from their oval bodies. Due to their coloration and body shape, they are often mistaken for yellow jackets but have a slimmer waist and a triangular side view. Paper wasps received their name from the paper-like material out of which they make their nests. A sting from a paper wasp can be extremely painful and can cause allergic reactions in some people.

We treated the nest with a knockdown liquid application, which will exterminate them almost immediately. After several moments, we removed the nest and treated the area with a liquid residual. This application will eliminate any returning paper wasps as well as prevent them, and any other stinging insect, from building a nest.

We were called out to a home in Monmouth Junction, NJ for a mouse exclusion. This particular home was overrun with mice.

I replaced her crawl space door with an Everlast vent cover to make sure mice can not enter. These covers, which can be installed against wood framing or masonry, not only block insects and wildlife from entering the crawl space, they also block out humid mold-forming air and moisture from entering. These aesthetically pleasing covers are made with a hard durable plastic that stand up to the worst weather conditions, and unlike wood vents, are completely maintenance free. Even though these covers completely seal the vents, they are easy to open should you need to access your crawl space.  All you have to do is twist a few large knobs, and you’re in!

With mice and other nuisance wildlife infestations, it is critical to find the potential entry points and seal them; otherwise, the infestation will never be permanently resolved.

We carefully inspected the entire home, filling every hole we could locate with  spray foam. The before/after pictures highlight that the gaps that were once open are now closed off. During my inspection, I also noticed a large gap underneath the front door that would allow mice to enter. I installed rubber weather stripping to seal that potential route.

Job Stories From Monmouth Junction, NJ
Using our UV Light to Find Mice Urine in Monmouth Junction, NJ

This homeowner in Monmouth Junction, NJ, noticed a strange smell in her laundry room one day and was nervous that she had some sort of nuisance wildlife infesting her home. So she called Cowleys for help and we were sent out to inspect and treat.

As soon as we inspected the laundry room, we noticed the smell but couldn't see any urine stains or droppings. So we did some detective work and used our UV light to find any urine stains. Sure enough, we found mice urine stains all along the baseboards and underneath the washing machine. Continuing our inspection to the exterior of the home we noticed that the cover to the dryer went was badly damaged. This was how the mice were able to infest the home. We brought this to the owners attention and she mentioned that, once the mice are gone, her husband will replace the damaged dryer vent.

For treatment, we installed several rodent bait stations throughout the laundry room and along the exterior of the home. Once we finished, we schedule several follow up inspections to monitor the infestation, replenish the bait in the bait stations, and seal up any openings around the exterior of the home.

Yellow Jackets Underneath the Overhang in Monmouth Junction, NJ

This customer in Monmouth Junction, NJ, kept getting attacked and stung by yellow jackets while sitting on her back deck and had no idea where they were coming from, so she called Cowleys for help. Yellow jackets are aggressive, territorial wasps, with distinctive yellow-and-black coloration, that are known for their propensity to sting anyone and anything that they perceive as a threat, such as those who venture too close to their nests or their food.

Once we arrived and closely inspected the area, we noticed that the yellow jackets had a small nest that was tucked away underneath the overhang! For treatment, we injected the nest with a knockdown dusting product. This treatment quickly exterminates the yellow jackets. Once they were eliminated, we removed the nest, disposed of it, and then treated the area with a liquid non-repellant residual to prevent any future yellow jackets from rebuilding another nest.

Large Ant Colony Underneath the Garden Rocks in Monmouth Junction, NJ

As we were inspecting this home in Monmouth Junction, NJ, we noticed a couple of trails of ants in the mulch bed, particularly around several of the large rocks. As we lifted the rocks up, we found several MASSIVE colonies of ants underneath them!

For treatment, we applied a granular bait throughout the landscape and the mulch beds! Next, we treated the entire exterior perimeter of the home with a liquid residual. The worker ants are going to come in contact with either of these products and bring them back to their nest. They will then transfer the treatments to their reproductive queen and the other ants in the colony. A short while later, the ants will be exterminated.

That Will Lead to a Bird Problem in Monmouth Junction, NJ

During a routine treatment of a home in Monmouth Junction, NJ, we noticed that one of the exhaust vents on the side of the home was badly damaged. Over time, due to harsh weather conditions and sun exposure, vent covers can become brittle and fall apart. Exposed vents can potentially lead to a bird, wasp, or hornet infestation.

We brought this to the owners' attention and mentioned that our Wildlife Division can correct this issue and install a DryerWallVent®. A DryerWallVent® is made out of heavy-duty galvanized steel and its large opening and angled damper provide maximum airflow efficiency for safe venting. Integrated magnets keep the damper closed when not in use, preventing squirrels, birds, and all nuisance wildlife from infesting the home. The owner agreed and scheduled an appointment with our Wildlife team.

Yellow Jacket Ground Hive in Monmouth Junction

A new customer in Monmouth Junction, NJ called our office after getting stung several times by yellow jackets. When I arrived, I equipped my protective bee suit and began inspecting. Although I spotted a few angry yellow jackets along the right side of the home, I could not spot their nest anywhere on the building or on the trees. That's when I started examining the ground and BINGO! I found a large yellow jacket nest in the ground on the side of the home!

In order to eliminate the yellow jackets, I'll nest to remove their nest. Before removing the nest I grabbed my extendable pole and inserted a knockdown dusting product directly into the entrance to the nest. This product rapidly neutralizes the yellow jackets. Once the activity dramatically slowed down, I dug out the nest and then properly disposed of it.
