Before After
Crawl Space Makeover in Port Monmouth, NJ Crawl Space Makeover in Port Monmouth, NJ

A Port Monmouth, NJ homeowner contacted Crawl Space Solutions By Cowleys to resolve his crawl space problems. The homeowner decided that it was time to invest in his home by repairing an unsightly area of crawl space that was visible from the basement. Also, the homeowner was concerned, and rightly so, that his open crawl space was allowing excess moisture seeping out from the soil into his home. The moisture source was increasing the indoor humidity (you could feel the wet air when standing near the crawl space) and the likelihood of dangerous mold growth.

These pictures show the “before and after” of our crawlspace project.

First, we removed all the debris and old insulation, leveled the ground for proper draining and installed drainage matting,  which is a dimpled plastic mat that allows all excess moisture to work its way over to the sump pump. Afterward, we installed a vapor barrier. A vapor barrier is a heavy-duty, 20-mil 7-ply sandwich of high and low-density polyethylene with a polyester-cord reinforcement. By encapsulating the crawl space & installing the vapor barrier over the foundation walls and floor will create a continuous air and moisture barrier. The vapor barrier is extremely durable and is treated with an antimicrobial to prevent mold

Job Stories From Port Monmouth, NJ
House Guests Brings Bed Bugs in Port Monmouth, NJ

A homeowner in Port Monmouth, NJ recently had a guest over her house for the holidays. Unknown to her, the guest brought someone else to the home - bed bugs! These bloodsucking pests quickly spread throughout her home! After finding multiple bites on her children's legs, she called Cowleys for help.  As we inspected the home, we found bed bugs in the crevices of the mattress in the guest bedroomSince the owner mentioned that her guest also slept in the recliner, we checked that and found be bugs there too!

First, we treated the mattress and the recliner with a bio-pesticide application. This product creates a barrier that infects and exterminates the bed bugs over a short period of time. Next, as a precaution, we treated every outlet throughout the home with a residual dusting product. This treatment will eradicate bed bugs of all life stages, sex, and feeding status within a short amount of time. Lastly, we scheduled several follow-up visits to monitor the infestation and apply any additional treatments if necessary.

Dirty rags attracts fruit flies in Port Monmouth restaurant

A restaurant in Port Monmouth found itself with a fruit fly infestation in its kitchen. These tiny, rapidly reproducing little pests, which are easily identified by their distinctive bright red eyes, are so-named because of their attraction to fermenting fruits and vegetables. Perishable food start to smell when bacteria and fungi that are decomposing the food release certain chemicals. While people may be repulsed by the smell of spoiled foods, for fruit flies, these odors are an attractant. And it’s not just the smell of overripe fruits that will lure fruit flies. They are attracted to any fermenting liquids no matter where it’s coming from. So, you’ll find these little gnats hovering over drains, garbage cans, garbage disposals, mops, grease traps, and in this commercial kitchen, dirty rags thrown in a bin inside a heated closet. The heat made the problem worse by accelerating the fermentation process. A pungent rotten odor that had permeated the closet had gone unnoticed to the restaurant staff. Unfortunately, we can become acclimated to certain odors over time and don’t even notice them.

Usually, insect and rodent infestations in restaurants can be traced back to some hygiene or sanitation issue, and fruit flies are no exception. Fruit flies will congregate around kitchen items or appliances that are not regularly cleaned and contain organic residue. We often find that pest infestations occur when proper cleaning protocols are not followed.

In sensitive areas such as commercial kitchens where food is being prepared, we strive to minimize the use of pesticides and instead employ EPA-recommended Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques that use less invasive environmental solutions. Here, the solution was simple. We resolved the infestation by removing the dirty rags and then thoroughly cleaning out the bin and the inside of the closet. Going forward, cleaning rags will be regularly washed and the staff will keep out only clean rags in a bucket of sanitized water. Restaurants and other commercial facilities that work with the pest control service by instituting and implementing appropriate procedures is the most effective long-term solution for avoiding infestations and minimizing their severity if they do occur.
