For this Highland Park, NJ homeowner, we installed an Everlast door for crawl space access. These vent covers prevent outside air and moisture from entering the crawl space through the exterior vents. They can be installed against wood framing or masonry. they also work exceptionally well, and are aesthetically pleasing. Made with a hard durable plastic, they stand up to the harsh winter weather conditions we see at the Shore. Unlike wood vents, these covers are completely maintenance free — they don’t rot, warp, or crack and they don’t need to be painted.

Our home improvement specialists love them! We have been using them now for years, and from our experience, they hold up to anything and are virtually indestructible. Also, even though these vent covers completely seal the vents from the outdoor elements, they are easy to open should you need to access your crawl space. All you need to do is twist a few easy-to-grip knobs, and you’re in!

Stopping the Moles from Destroying the Yard in Highland Park, NJ

This homeowner in Highland Park, NJ, was having a big problem with moles burrowing throughout her yard and destroying her landscape! Moles are small insectivores that live and forage underground in broad systems of burrows and tunnels. They are about 4-11" long (including tail), have brown or grey fur with a cylindrical body with a short tail, very small concealed eyes and ears and small hind feet and larger forefeet for digging. Most people have never seen a mole, however, they are well aware of the damage that they cause! When you see a series of 3- to 5-inch round, raised ridges breaking the surface of your lawn that is accompanied by tiny dirt volcanoes, you know you have moles tunneling below ground.

To safely eliminate the moles, we utilized our Burrow RX, which is a carbon monoxide device that uses a smoke-oil tracer. The dye from the Burrow RX lets us know how far we are reaching in the tunnel as well as if there are any leaks. When we notice a leak, we fill it in. The gas isn’t toxic to humans because we are outdoors in a well-ventilated area. The Burrow RX is much more humane than using a pesticide or a trap and it guarantees that we are eliminating the moles. There’s also no residual that is left behind, so the homeowner and her family are in no danger of getting a residue on them

Bed bug casings found in Highland Park home

Bed bugs often leave a trail of evidence behind once they have infested your home. You might not always find a live bed bug, especially in the early stages of an infestation, but that doesn't mean that they haven't been there!

What are some good signs indicating that you have a bed bug problem? Here’s a few.

First, check yourself! Unexplained, often itchy bites, that often come in rows are a common early sign of bed bug activity. These parasites feed on us for our blood while we are resting or sleeping. They do their dirty work and leave before we even know what hit us. happened.

Next, skin casings are a great way to  identify bedbugs. As a bedbug grows and matures through its life stages, it will molt and shed its outer layer of skin just like a snake. If you happen to come across an undisturbed skin, it will often be the same exact shape as a bed bug itself.

Finally, small black spots or specks on your sheets, some as small as the size of a pinhead, is another great way to make a bed bug identification. Those spots are dried blood that a bedbug defecates before going back into hiding. Once the blood dries, it typically turns black.

By keeping a watchful eye to things, that will help with early detection and elimination. If you are worried that there could be a bedbug issue, call Cowley for a thorough inspection.
