A homeowner in Wickatunk contacted Cowleys because of a clogged gutter problem. According to the homeowner, rainwater was pouring over everywhere, and during heavy rains, you had to run the gauntlet through a sheet of water whenever entering or leaving the home. But clogged gutters are far more than a nuisance. If left untreated, they can lead to expensive repairs. Gutter systems have a simple, but crucial purpose: to channel water off the roof and discharge it away from the home’s foundation. Gutter blockage causes water to pour over the gutter’s sides of the gutter and pool around the foundation. Over time, this accumulated water will weaken the foundation  — and in severe cases, cause it to collapse! Pooling water can also lead to dangerous mold growth. During the warmer months, pooled water in the gutter and around the home will attract insects and become a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Besides damaging a home’s foundation, clogged gutters can lead to wood damage, usually weakening the fascia boards on which the gutter system is attached. This can lead to wood rot, and often becomes a common access point for invading wildlife. The razor-sharp claws of raccoons and squirrels can shred through rotted, wakened wood like it was butter. Also, when water spills over the sides, it can land on trees and shrubs around the base of the home causing landscape damage. As winter approaches, clogged gutters increase the likelihood that ice dams will form on the lower edge of the roof. Destructive ice dams are a prime cause of winter roof damage, which in turn, allows water seepage into the attic, causing structural damage and mold growth.

Upon arrival, we spoke with the homeowner about her clogged gutter problem. Cowleys offers full gutter cleaning services, an invaluable service to those homeowners with neither the time, interest, or mobility to be climbing up and down ladders. We first removing all of the leaves and other debris from the gutters to allow proper water flow from the gutters to the down spouts. Next, we run water through all the drains to make sure every thing was working properly, and that the water is draining away from the foundation. Cleaning out the gutters, especially during the fall while the leaves are dropping, may seem like a menial task, but it is an extremely important part of home maintenance. Those who ignore or postpone gutter cleaning can easily find themselves with thousands of dollars in unnecessary property damage. After we had completed our gutter clean-up, we explained everything that we had done to the homeowner. She was pleased to hear that her clogged gutter problem was resolved.

Job Stories From Wickatunk, NJ
Cockroaches everywhere in Wickatunk kitchen

Two Cowleys pest control technicians were dispatched to a home in Wickatunk for a thorough roach clean-out.  A residential cockroach infection is more than a nuisance or social embarrassment. A roach infestation is a serious health hazard. Roaches are vectors (carriers) of bacteria and other pathogens that can lead to a number of diseases from diarrhea to food poisoning and sepsis. These insects contaminate food and kitchen countertops. When foraging for food, they leave behind a trail of waste material, egg casings, and molted exoskeletons. When eating, roaches also regurgitate their saliva and digestive fluids. Their secretions contain allergens that can trigger rashes, sneezing, and other allergic reactions. For those with asthma, inhaling cockroach allergens can trigger respiratory attacks. Roach populations increase rapidly — a single egg casing (ootheca) can contain up to 50 eggs, and it takes a roach only about three months to morph from egg to adult. Needless to say, roach infestations are nothing to trifle with. It important to deal with these infestations in their earliest stages, and have it done right. Often DIY roach projects often make matters worse, further spreading the infestation to other areas of the home.

During our inspection, we found heavy roach clusters in numerous areas in the kitchen — behind the refrigerator, in the cabinet above the refrigerator, behind the stove, and even hidden behind the backsplash on the kitchen wall behind the sink. Roaches eat more than what we think of as food. They even consume glue on contact paper, wallpaper paste, and soap.

To treat the infestation we used a aerosol product that forces the roaches out of their hiding spots. We also treated all the baseboards and wall voids. We’ll return for a two-week follow-up visit to re-inspect and perform additional treatments as necessary. It is also imperative that homeowners ensure that good sanitation practices are followed in the kitchen. We’ll work on this job until this infestation is gone and the home is roach-free.
