Uncovered Chimney Harboring Starlings in Neptune, NJ
Before | After |
---|---|
A new customer in Neptune, NJ was having an issue with starlings nesting in her chimney. Starlings are one of the most popular nuisance birds we deal with and have adapted well both in urban and rural areas. Starlings are often described as loud, obnoxious, destructive, and aggressive. They have outcompeted native birds and their massive flock sizes cause significant damage in a short period of time. The acidic droppings of starlings damage roofs, create sanitation problems, and pose a serious health hazard for families.
First, we carefully removed the nesting debris and then disinfected the chimney with a solution that targets bird mites. If disturbed while removing, bird mites will make their way inside and quickly infest the home. After disinfecting the area we installed a chimney cap over the chimney. This heavy-duty material is constructed out of 24 Gauge Top and Flange, and 18 Gauge Galvanized Mesh. It is designed to prevent access to the chimney from all nuisance birds, bats, and all nuisance wildlife. Now the home is properly secured!

A new Home Protection Plan customer in Neptune, NJ, called our Pest Control Division after noticing a large number of ants in her kitchen. So we were sent out to inspect and treat. In order to find out where the ants were coming, we inspected the exterior of the home. Sure enough, we found several trails of ants crawling along the side of the building and infesting the home by getting underneath the siding.
Since the ants were coming from the mulch bed, we treated that area, as well as the entire landscape, with a granular bait. Afterward, we treated the entire exterior perimeter of the building and, with the owners permission, the cracks, crevices, and baseboards of the kitchen with a liquid non-repellent. Once the ants come in contact with either of these products they'll return to their nest and transfer the treatments to their queen and the other ants in the colony.
A short while later, the ants will be exterminated.
As we were treating this commercial property in Neptune, NJ, we found a massive infestation of ants near the back entrance. There were thousands of them trailing along the area. For treatment, we applied a liquid residual to the area, as well as around the exterior of the building. Afterward, we treated the grassy areas with a granular bait. Both of these applications aren’t going to eliminate the ants immediately, but allow the worker ants to return to their nest and then transfer the treatments to the other ants in their colony and their queen. In a short amount of time, the ant colony will be exterminated.
A homeowner in Neptune, NJ wanted to spruce up her yard and put down new mulch around her entire property. After only two days of putting down the mulch, her kitchen was infested with ants! Although mulch provides a number of benefits for your yard, it also provides the perfect living conditions for ants and other pests. Mulch holds moisture (which attracts ants), protects insects from the sun and predators, and is a food source for different types of ants.
After thoroughly inspecting the interior of the house I found pavement ants trailing from a kitchen window to a cabinet. Pavement ants received their clever name from nesting in pavements, driveways, and sidewalks. They are darkish brown to black in color and are approximately a 1/8 of an inch in size. Although pavement ants aren't a health risk, once they make their way inside a home, they can contaminate food.
As I followed the ant trail to the exterior side of the kitchen window I came across in six different ant trails coming from the mulch up to the house shingles. The ants were able to gain access into the home from underneath the siding and the kitchen window.
I treated all the cracks and crevices in the kitchen and bathroom with a liquid non-repellent and then treated the baseboards in the kitchen, bathroom and the surrounding rooms with an ant gel bait. Next, I treated the entire exterior of the home with the liquid non-repellent. The gel bait and the liquid application isn’t meant to immediately eliminate the ants. What happens is when an ant comes in contact with either of these treatments they will carry it back to the colony and share it with the other ants, including the queen. Eventually, the ants are eliminated. I scheduled a follow-up inspection to make sure that the home is ant free and, if necessary, apply additional treatment methods.
Recently, I went on a routine pest service call for one of our commercial accounts, an apartment complex in Neptune, NJ. As I was inspecting all the common areas, I noticed a few ants on glue boards that I installed in the boiler room on my previous visit to monitor possible crawling insects invaders. I continued to inspect this area very careful and sure enough, I found pavement ants in a crack in the wall.
Pavement ants are one of the most common home-infesting ants. They are approximately 1/8 of an inch long, dark brown to black, and nest under sidewalks, driveways, and concrete slabs. They are far from picky eaters as they will eat anything deem fruits and grease to other dead insects. Pavement ants feed on almost anything from sugar, fruits, small seeds, and grease.
For treatment, I applied a liquid residual application along the cracks and crevices in the basement. This application is a non-repellent and is undetectable to the ants. They will carry this application to their colony where they will groom one another. In a short amount of time, the ants are eliminated. I informed the property manager who will hire a contractor team to fix the cracks in the pavement.
Recently, I performed a home protection plan (HPP) servicing for a residential customer in Neptune, NJ. As sometimes happens, the homeowner was not there when I arrived. I contacted the customer by phone to let him know I was there and if there were any pest issues I should be aware of. She told me that she had seen some ants crawling around on her back deck. Spotting foraging ants outside your home is an all-too-common occurrence this time of year. Also, it’s far better to deal with these pests before they find entry points to gain access inside your home.
During further inspection of the deck, I moved a storage box and, bingo, I found ants nesting underneath. I treated the deck area, both underneath and on top, with an effective residual product. This treatment will soon resolve this outdoor ant infestation. These periodic HPP visits allow us to deal with pest infestations in their early stages, helping homeowners avoid more serious, entrenched infestations. It’s far easier for us to deal with pests outside of the home before they find their way inside.
The customer was seeing hundreds of "flying ants" in her bathroom. Soon as I walked in the bathroom, I realized she was having a termite swarm.
I then went into her crawlspace to locate the source of the swarm. Directly under the bathroom was the Termite mud tube the swarmers were emerging from.
Cowleys will treat the entire perimeter of the home by trenching and soil rodding Termidor termiticide into the soil around the house, and also drilling the block under the bathroom in the crawlspace.
