Dirt Is Not The Issue Regarding Cockroaches

As soon as a person hears the word roach they automatically think dirty and unkempt.

What is one of the worst things a person can say about an overnight establishment? They can call it a roach motel! Why is this such an insult? Because as soon as a person hears the word roach they automatically think dirty and unkempt. This may be one of the reasons that people actually feel shame if they have a cockroach problem. This feeling of shame may even lead them to refuse to call in a professional and instead try to take care of the problem themselves. Don’t let this happen! Roach problems can be particularly difficult to control with DIY measures. Instead, if there is a problem, give Cowleys a call, but before you have a problem take these steps to keep roaches at bay.

Although roaches are believed by many to only live in filthy places, they can in fact live in very clean places. The most important requirement for roaches to thrive is a warm, humid environment. As the temperatures increase this spring, a warm, humid environment could be describing your home. So what do you do to lessen your chance of having roaches? Try to control the humidity and moisture in your home. It is always a good idea to check under your kitchen and bathroom sinks for any leaks. A warm, dark, under-sink cabinet with consistent moisture is heaven for a roach.

Although Fido will surely disagree, only having pet food out during meal time helps decreases the likelihood of roaches. Cockroaches need food, and an open food bowl left out all the time is an excellent place for a roach to find nourishment. Human food left out can also be a problem. Displays of cookies or trays of nuts may look nice on your counter, but if you are not actually eating them, they should be in a tightly sealed container.

Although you should feel no shame at having a cockroach problem, that does not mean that you should let it go. In fact, getting rid of the cockroaches promptly should be one of your top priorities. Roaches may be small, but they are dangerous. They are not known to bite, but a cockroach poses a serious health threat just the same. Cockroaches have been implicated in the spread of 33 types of bacteria, 6 parasitic worms, and at least 7 other types of human pathogens. Some of the diseases they spread are serious health threats like Salmonella and E. coli. Touching a surface that has been walked on by a disease carrying roach can get you infected with that disease. Roaches can also trigger allergy and asthma attacks because their shed skin, saliva, and droppings all contain a potent allergen.

Keep your humidity levels in check, keep your food in well-sealed containers, and remember that DIY roach control measures rarely have the outcome you want. Working with Cowleys can mean eradicating the roaches in your house quickly and safely, making your house healthier for you and your family.

What Happens to Ants During the Winter?
2024-02-27T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
Does this mean that your ant problem is gone for good? Maybe, maybe not.

In the spring and summer months it may seem almost common place to see a train of ants marching across the sidewalk, a picnic blanket, or unfortunately even across your countertop. You probably tried a variety of different ways to stop this from happening. Then finally by Thanksgiving your efforts seemed to work. The train of ants stopped, hurray! It felt good not to have to deal with them anymore. Does that mean that your ant problem is gone for good? Maybe, maybe not.

We all learned about hibernation in school. Usually we were told about animals like bears eating lots of food in the fall so they could get nice and chubby and happily sleep all winter long. Guess what, in New Jersey ants don’t go to sleep, but they do something very similar.

During the summer ants eat a variety of food from both natural sources (like nectar from flowers) and less natural sources (like juice spilled on our counters). Outdoors they also consume seeds, plants, and even dead insects. Indoors, they seem to consume anything left on the counter. As the weather begins to turn colder, ants start to consume more carbohydrates. These carbohydrates let them gain more weight and store more energy.
When ants have stored enough energy they go into a slower metabolic state called “diapause.” They appear very sluggish and do not travel far. They do not eat, drink, or lay eggs during this time. Since ants are cold blooded animals they seek out warm places, such as deep soil, under rocks, or under the bark of trees. In order to maintain body heat, ants will clusters together around the queen to protect her. During most winters, the combination of a good overwintering spot and the combined body heat from all the ants being together will allow them to survive the winter.

Your winter may be ant free but what happens in the spring when the weather gets warmer? Hungry ants will forage for food. If your efforts to stop ants in your home last year did not involve stopping them from entering your home, you may be seeing them again. Exclusion is a very important step in ant control. Make sure that easy entry points (like holes in screens and cracks in your foundation) are fixed.

What happens if you are seeing ants in your home now? If you are seeing ants in your home during the winter months most likely the ants have forgone finding a nice patch of deep soil and have created a colony inside your home. Because houses are heated year round, ants will not have to go into a state of diapause, they will continue to forage in places like your kitchen and pantry.
If you have an ant problem during the winter or if your ant problem did not abate until the winter started it is a good idea to give Cowleys a call. Ants will return to places they have found food in the past, if you want to have an ant free spring and summer, reach out to us!

Why Should You Worry About Pest Control Now When It Is Cold Out?
2024-01-15T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
It may be counterintuitive, but, in fact, one of the best times of the year to get in touch with a pest control company is in the winter.

Let’s face it, it is way too cold in the North East for many bugs to survive. You will not go outside and be stung by a bee nor annoyed by a mosquito. Because of this, many people who don’t have an active infestation in their homes aren’t thinking about bugs. They put off getting in touch with a pest control company because it just really isn’t on their radar. Many assume that it makes more sense to wait until the spring when bugs become more prevalent. It may be counterintuitive, but, in fact, one of the best times of the year to get in touch with Cowleys is in the winter.

Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is true in many facets of our life and extremely accurate when it comes to pest control. The greatest reason to start your Home Protection Plan in the winter is it's easier to prevent an infestation than to deal with one.

Winter is a great time to prepare for the onslaught of bugs that will happen in the spring. In the winter, we can come to your house and assess where the weaknesses lie in your defense against pests. The first priority would be to determine if there are areas where pests can enter your home. A few examples of common entry point are cracks in the foundation, holes near windows, or gaps under the door. Putting a physical barrier, like a premium waterproof adhesive, in these areas will make it difficult for bugs to enter your home when they become more prevalent outside. The added bonus of fixing these areas in the winter is it can help with heating costs and the overall comfort in your home.

Another aspect of the inspection will likely include going through the house to observe signs of previous infestations. Signs of previous infestations can help the pest control professional create a plan to stop bugs from getting in again in the future. If a pest has found an area of your home that was conducive to their way of living in the past, you will likely find them there again in the future, if nothing has been done to stop them.

Even though there are little to no bugs outside during the winter, your home, with its temperature control and food sources, may harbor some unwanted pests. With less pests coming in from the outside, winter is a great time for Cowleys to eradicate all the pests inside your home. Getting rid of them from your home doesn’t only create a nicer atmosphere, it makes your home healthier as pests are often the harbingers of disease.

To make sure you have a happy and healthy home come spring, give Cowleys a call this winter. To quote another famous person, Michael Jordan, “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen." Make a healthy, pest free house happen today!

Deer and Geese Control Strategies for Community Associations in NJ
2024-01-09T00:00:00.05Z
Drew Cowley
Here are some effective strategies for controlling deer and geese populations, which will in turn help Community Associations maintain a safe environment for all residents.

Community associations in New Jersey often face challenges when it comes to dealing with nuisance wildlife, particularly deer and geese. These nuisance wildlife can cause damage to properties and pose safety risks to residents. Here are some effective strategies for controlling deer and geese populations, which will in turn help Community Associations maintain a safe environment for all residents.

Deer Control Strategies:

Fencing: Installing tall and sturdy fences around the community can help deter deer from entering and causing damage. Fences should be at least 8 feet tall to prevent deer from jumping over them. It is important to ensure that the fence is properly maintained and regularly inspected for any damages or gaps.

Landscaping Modifications: Deer are attracted to certain plants and shrubs, so it is essential to choose deer-resistant vegetation for the community's landscaping. Plants such as lavender, yarrow, and daffodils are known to repel deer. Additionally, using fencing or shrubs to protect vulnerable plants can help minimize damage.

Repellents: There are various commercially available deer repellents that can be applied to plants and shrubs to discourage deer from feeding on them. These repellents often contain strong scents or tastes that are unpleasant to deer. It is important to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer when using these products.

Deer Population Management: In some cases, when deer populations become too large and pose a significant threat to the community, it may be necessary to implement deer population management strategies. This can involve working with professionals, like Deer Solutions (tell them Cowleys sent ya), to organize controlled hunts or sterilization programs to help control the deer population within the community.

Geese Control Strategies:

Habitat Modification: Geese are attracted to bodies of water, so modifying the community's landscape to discourage geese from nesting and feeding can be effective. This can include installing barriers or using landscaping techniques that make the area less desirable for geese, such as adding dense vegetation or using tall grasses near water bodies.

Egg Oiling & Addling: Geese reproduce rapidly, so implementing egg management strategies can help control their population. This involves locating and treating nests to prevent eggs from hatching. It is crucial to consult with Little Rascals by Cowleys or local authorities before taking any action regarding geese eggs, as geese and their eggs are protected under the Migratory Bird Act and if ignored, hefty fines can occur.

Education and Awareness: Educating residents about the negative impacts of feeding geese and the importance of not encouraging their presence can contribute to long-term geese control. Promoting responsible behavior and discouraging the feeding of geese will help minimize their presence in the community.

Physical Bird Deterrents: Working with Little Rascals by Cowleys, we can install several physical Bird Deterrents to safely and effectively prevent the geese from harboring around your community.

AVIX Autonomic is a fully automated laser bird repellent that keeps birds away 24/7. Birds perceive the moving laser light as a physical threat and flee immediately when the beam passes by. This solution is proven to reduce bird nuisance by more than 70%.

Another effective deterrent is Bird Grid Wire. The stainless steel grid wire is a deterrent that interferes with the geese's flight pattern and makes it uncomfortable for them to roost. We also attach a Strobe Bird Deterrent Light that works at night and is solar powered. The geese think the blinking light is a predator stalking them, making them feel uncomfortable and assist in moving them off the pond.

Another effective deterrent is the utilization of liquid goose deterrents. Liquid Goose Deterrents use the sense of taste to get rid of the geese. They are made using methyl anthranilate, a grape extract that is sprayed on the lawn to give it a flavor that the geese do not like. This substance irritates the goose’s trigeminal nerves and mucous membranes and causes them to leave the area searching for a better grazing site.

By implementing these strategies, community associations in New Jersey can effectively manage deer and geese populations, reduce property damage, and ensure the safety of residents. With proactive measures and a well-informed community, wildlife-human conflicts can be minimized, creating a more peaceful and enjoyable living environment for all.

Clothes Moths Ruining Your Holiday Outfit?
2023-12-15T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
Has this ever happened to you? You know exactly what you want to wear to a party. It is a sweater that you only bring out during the holiday season. This year you bring it out and there is a hole.

Has this ever happened to you? You know exactly what you want to wear to a party. It is a sweater that you only bring out during the holiday season. This year you bring it out and there is a hole. You must be going crazy, you don’t remember there being a hole last year. Well, you are not crazy, there probably wasn’t a hole last year. What could have happened? Clothes moths!
There are two common types of clothes moths, the Casemaking Clothes Moth and the Webbing Clothes Moth. Both of these pests damage clothing and fabric. Wool, silk, and furs are the most common target of clothes moths but in rare situations they have been known to destroy natural fibers such as rope and even cotton. Knowing a little bit about these moths can help you to protect your clothes.

The adult clothes moth you might catch flying around your vintage tablecloth is not the one who is actually eating it. Clothes moths eat fabrics when they are in their larval stage. That means no matter how many flying moths you kill, your clothes are probably still being damaged. The larvae of clothes moths are particularly attracted to items that have body oils or food residue on them. That means that before you put your sweater away you need to clean it. Even if your table cloth looks like no food has touched it, if food was served on it, make sure it is laundered before it is stored.

The next important step to prevent issues with clothes moths is to know where to store your clothes and fabric. When in the larval stage, clothes moths are attracted to spaces that are humid, dark and warm. Making sure that the closet or storage area you use is not humid can go a long way in helping to protect your fabrics. Keeping the area clean with regular vacuuming is important. If items are not going to be used for a long period of time, keeping them in tightly sealed storage bins or compression storage bags help. But, before you place your items in these containers thoroughly inspect them for moths or their larvae.

If you are having a problem with clothes moths you may want to use the trick our grandparents used and sprinkle moth balls on your clothes; this would be a mistake! The chemicals in moth balls are toxic to both humans and pets. There have also been cases when children have mistaken moth balls for candy (they do look a lot like Mentos) and have been injured. Lastly, who wants to smell like moth balls?

If you think you might have clothes moths the best idea is to contact Cowleys. We will actually inspect your closet, storage area, and fabric to determine the severity of the infestation as well as use targeted treatment methods, which means there will be minimal disruption to your home. Having Cowleys take care of this problem will give you peace of mind that everything from your expensive sweaters to your family heirlooms are safe from the ravages of clothes moths.

Keep Pesky Pests Away This Holiday Season
2023-11-27T00:00:00.05Z

Cowleys, along with and the National Pest Management Association, share tips to prevent encounters with pests during holiday baking and decorating

The exciting and busy holiday season has arrived which means it’s time for baking, gift shopping, decorating and travel! In the hustle and bustle of this season, pest prevention can easily be overlooked, giving pests an open invitation to your holiday celebrations.

"Baking and cooking during the holiday season can attract pantry pests like Indian meal moths and merchant grain beetles and trust me no one wants those added to their favorite recipes,” said, Bill Cowley, CoOwner of Cowleys."

“Additionally, real greenery, such as wreaths, garland and trees can harbor hidden spiders and mites, while boxes of decorations can easily become infested during the holiday off-season."

To avoid pest encounters this holiday, Cowleys, and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), recommend the following tips to keep your holidays pest-free:

Store food properly in containers with an airtight seal.

Before purchasing food at the grocery store, inspect boxes and bags for any damage.

Keep kitchen surfaces and floors clean and regularly dispose of garbage in a sealed receptacle.

Before decorating, thoroughly inspect all live greenery for any pests or eggs.

Inspect and shake out all live greenery, including trees, before bringing decorations indoors.

When disposing of your greenery, place it far away from the home to avoid attracting pests.

Inspect stored items for signs of gnaw marks or droppings as these are signs of a potential rodent infestation.

If you suspect an infestation, do not attempt to treat the issue yourself! We at Cowleys will be more than happy to inspect your home and prevent these pests from ruining you holiday plans.

The Cold Won't Stop Termites
2023-11-20T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
It may be cold outside, but that doesn't mean your house is safe from termites.

Termites are cold blooded, but they don’t hibernate or die off in the winter. Even with the cold winds blowing outside, termites could be hard at work destroying the wood in your home.

Your first thought may be termites are so small (1/4 inch) how could they be such a problem? These silent destroyers of wood are estimated to cause between $1 and $2 billion dollars in repairs annually in the Unites States alone. Sadly, many of these repairs are not covered by homeowners insurance. So what should a home owner do? To help reduce the chance of termites causing you financial troubles, start off by taking these steps.

First, manage the moisture in your home. Termites need moisture to survive and moisture helps wood to be more palatable to termites. Make sure you have proper ventilation in your bathrooms, and if necessary consider a dehumidifier. On the outside of your home, make sure your gutters and downspouts are clean, and that water is diverted away from your foundation. If you have a sprinkler system, make sure the spray is not facing toward your home.

Moisture can be a significant problem in the basement or crawl space. A neglected crawl space can lead to termite problems. Many of us have a crawl space that we would prefer to forget about. It would be nice if we could overlook them, but when crawl spaces are not properly ventilated with a good vapor barrier, they could leach moisture into the floor joists and subfloor making the structure of your home more susceptible to termite damage. If you are concerned about your crawl space, there are encapsulation programs that do wonders to keep down moisture.

Next, make it more difficult for termites to enter your home by removing easy pathways. Both shrubs and trees can be used by termites as a virtual highway into your home. Keep all foliage at least a foot away from any part of the structure. Traditional wood mulch can also be a pathway for termites. You may want to consider alternative mulch near your foundation. Pine straw can be a good alternative because it is less appealing to termites and ants than traditional wood mulch. You may even want to consider an inorganic cover like pea gravel or stone.

Another important step is to remove items that encourage termites to come close to your home. A firewood pile is a staple in many homes over the winter. For convenience sake, many people have them right outside their door or even on their porch. This is a bad idea! Firewood against the house encourages termites to get closer. Keep your woodpile at least twenty feet from your home.

There is a reason termites are able to do so much damage in a year; it is because they are often not detected until there are serious problems. Having your home inspected and treated can save you a significant amount of money in the long run. Make sure to give Cowleys a call to make sure termites don’t cause you problems.

Keep Pesky Pests Away This Holiday Season

Cowleys Pest Services
Cowleys and the National Pest Management Association share tips to prevent encounters with pests during holiday baking and decorating

The exciting and busy holiday season has arrived which means it’s time for baking, gift shopping, decorating and travel! In the hustle and bustle of this season, pest prevention can easily be overlooked, giving pests an open invitation to your holiday celebrations. To protect your holiday plans from the threat of pests, Cowleys is joining the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) in sharing key prevention tips.

"Baking and cooking during the holiday season can attract pantry pests like Indian meal moths and merchant grain beetles and trust me no one wants those added to their favorite recipes,” said Bill Cowley, CoOwner at Cowleys. “Additionally, real greenery, such as wreaths, garland and trees can harbor hidden spiders and mites, while boxes of decorations can easily become infested during the holiday off-season. To avoid pest encounters this holiday, we recommend taking a few extra steps to inspect items and keep pests outside.”

If you suspect an infestation, do not attempt to treat the issue yourself. Give Cowleys a call to safely remove pests from your home.

Beware of Spooky Spiders this Fall Season

Cowleys and the National Pest Management Association educate homeowners on spider species and the threats they pose

If you’ve noticed more spiders in your home recently, you’re not alone! Fall is peak season for many spider species found throughout parts of the U.S. so more frequent sightings are common this time of year and can give quite a scare if you find them in your home. To help homeowners avoid encounters with these spooky pests, Cowleys is sharing key information about spider habits and prevention tips.

"Just like us humans, spiders like warm environments where they can be sheltered from cold weather” said Bill Cowley, CoOwner at Cowleys. “Unfortunately, homes provide the perfect harborage site for these creepy crawlers to hide out during the cool fall and winter months, which can lead to increased spider encounters and even a large infestation.”

While some spiders bite if disturbed, most species are not harmful to humans. However, there are two species with particularly potent bites that can lead to severe symptoms such as pain and swelling or an open sore at the bite site, redness, cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, tremors, sweating, and more.

Black widow spiders are black and shiny with a telltale red hourglass shape on the underside of their abdomen. This spider tends to seek out dry and dark locations. Female black widow spiders are known to be aggressive and bite in defense, especially when guarding eggs. In rare cases, black widow spider bites can be fatal.

Brown recluse spiders are light to dark brown, with a characteristic dark brown violin marking on their back. The brown recluse spider also bites in defense when disturbed and prefers closets, attics, and crawlspaces as they provide warm, dry, and dark environments. Severe bite wounds from brown recluse spiders may take longer to heal and can result in scarring.

The best way to keep spiders out of your home is to remove potential harborage sites. Be sure to keep garages, attics, and basements clean and clutter-free and seal up cracks or crevices around the home.

Real Rats Have No Place Near Your Home This Season
2023-10-16T00:00:00.05Z
Drew Cowley
Here are three actions you can take to keep rats away.

Fake rats are a well-loved staple in Halloween decorations. With their beady little eyes, their ability to scurry around quickly, and their propensity to only be seen after dark, rats make the perfect creepy animal for this scary season. While fake rats are needed for haunted houses and spooky décor, real rats have no place near your home this season. Here are three actions you can take to keep rats away.

First, understanding a few common rat habits will help you to keep them away. There are two types of rats that can be found in our area, the Norway rat and the roof rat. As you may have surmised from their name, roof rats prefer to be up high and are very adept climbers. Norway rats are known for their burrowing skills and prefer to be closer to the ground. The first action you should take is to look outside of your home for cracks or holes where a rat could enter. Look both high up (for roof rats) and down by your foundation (for Norway rats). Remember, a rat can fit inside a hole the size of a quarter so you should not overlook relatively small holes. If you find holes, fill them.

Both varieties of rats take advantage of trees and shrubs that are close to your home. They can use this foliage to hide. If they are hiding close to your home, it is likely they will venture into it soon. Rats also use tree limbs as highways. If branches touch your roof you have created easy access for rats. It is extremely important to trim back your trees and bushes a few feet away from your home. It is also a good idea to remove leaf litter and other yard waste that would prove to be a useful hiding place.

Rats hide near homes because they are looking for food and shelter. Human garbage is a well sought after source of food for rats. Because of this, the way you deal with that garbage can go a long way in keeping rats away. Make sure to keep your garbage in a bin with a lid. The best bins are made of metal as rats can chew through plastic relatively easily. Leaving plastic bags out is a clear invitations for rats to feast on your garbage. The smell of mint has been determined to repel rats, so placing your garbage in a mint scented garbage bag before you place it in a metal bin will give you an added layer of protection.

These are three tried and true methods to keep rats away. Some people will try to convince you that ultrasonic devices, lights, sounds, and predator models (like owl and snake statues) will rid your house of rats, but they have been proven to be ineffective. If you have taken the actions listed above and still see signs of rats, it's important to call Cowleys quickly. Rats are not only creepy, they have the ability to transmit a number of diseases to humans and are a fire hazard due to their propensity to chew on wires.

What Steps Should You Take if You are Stung by a Bee, a Hornet, or a Wasp?
2023-09-27T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
There are four important steps to take if you are stung.

Many of us associate bees with spring, but it is in the fall that we should worry the most about bees, wasps, and other stinging insects. Stinging insects are active from early spring to late fall, but their numbers are the largest, and they are most aggressive from August until October. By the time fall comes nests can be rather large. With populations growing steadily over the summer some nests can have 4,000 members! This is also the time of year when natural food sources start to run out. Flowers and insects are not as abundant as they were in the summer. Stinging insects start to see the food that you have at a barbeque or picnic as their own and will become aggressive.

So what do you do if one of these now more prevalent and more aggressive stinging insects actually stings you? There are four important steps to take if you are stung.

First, check to see if you are having an allergic reaction. If you feel dizzy, have swelling of your lips or tongue, or have difficulty breathing you should go to the emergency room immediately. If you know that you are allergic to bee stings, carrying an epinephrine auto-injector is a very good idea. If you realized that the sting hurt, but you are not having any allergic reaction your next step should be to remove the stinger with a dull edged object, like a credit card. A bee, in many cases, will leave behind the venom sack with the stinger so removing it quickly is optimal. If you are stung by a wasp or hornet the stinger will remain attached to its body allowing it to sting you many times. If you are stung by a wasp or hornet you will likely not need to remove the stinger.

Next step is to apply a cool compress to the sting. Do not submerge the whole wound in ice as that can cause problems with healing. To make a cool compress, soak a clean cloth in cold water. Then wring most of the water out and fold into a pad. You should hold the compress firmly against the sting. You can re-soak the cloth every few minutes to keep it cool but do not keep it on the sting for more than 20 minutes.

At this point, if you are feeling itchy and there is a small amount of swelling, taking an antihistamine or applying an antihistamine cream can offer some relief. Do not take any medications if you have not been approved by your doctor to take them.

Lastly, if you are able, you should elevate the site of the sting as this usually reduces swelling. Although the stinger of a bee, wasp or hornet is relatively small, it can create significant swelling. This sometimes leads people to believe that the site is infected. Luckily it is rare (although not unheard of) for an infection to develop from a sting.

There are no doubts that stings are painful and unpleasant. To reduce the chance of a sting at all, give Cowleys a call to remove nests from your home and yard. We can help give you peace of mind that a sting is much less likely to destroy your back yard picnic or barbeque.

Treat Your Vacation Property in the Off-Season
2023-11-17T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
The off-season is quiet around the Jersey Shore with barely any visitors, except for stubborn pests!

The Jersey Shore is covered in vacation homes and rental properties of all kinds, despite the relatively short summer season. Many of our customers are owners of these homes and work hard to maintain them— from landscaping and plumbing to HVAC and pest control, it all matters and affects rental value. So while your vacation homes are empty and all of the vacationers have left the shore, take the opportunity to prepare for next season with proper pest control services.

There are few things more off-putting in a rental than a pest problem. Whether it's cockroaches in the pantry, termites in the wood deck, or rodents in the walls, renters will take notice and be sure to avoid that property next time around. That's why we think fall and winter are the perfect time to protect your home from pests and prevent infestations wherever possible— before they become a problem.

To help overwinter your home and prevent infestations, follow these tips:

Seal exterior openings, gaps, and cracks

Remove all food while you're away

Deep clean before closing for winter

Remove clutter indoors and outside

Keep yard/vegetation trimmed low

Store firewood away from the home's exterior

Ensure garage/doors seal flush to the ground

Call a professional to rule out or eradicate current infestations

Effective pest control is a year-round effort, even in New Jersey where winter temperatures can plummet to freezing. The off-season is the most ideal time to perform vacation home maintenance, of course, but at Cowleys we know pests never take a day off. That's why we have our Home Protection Plans! When you sign up for our service plans, you'll know exactly when to expect us in the spring, summer, and fall. This will allow you to potentially block off certain days to allow for thorough pest control services without unexpected interruption to your guests.

Ants Don't Just Ruin Picnics, They Can Be a Real Problem Inside Your Home
2023-07-18T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
While ants at a picnic are incredibly irritating, they are even more exasperating when they are in your home.

Everyone has seen the old cartoon of ants walking across a red checked table cloth carrying all the food from a family’s picnic. While ants at a picnic are incredibly irritating, they are even more exasperating when they are in your home.

There are many species of ants in New Jersey but three of the most common are the Pavement Ant, the Odorous House Ant, and the Sugar Ant. All three types of ants are relatively small, under a half inch in size, but there are subtle differences to help you tell them apart.

It can be difficult to distinguish between Pavement Ants and Odorous House Ants. Both are approximately 1/8 of an inch long and dark brown to black in color. The difference between these two species is subtle. Although both ants can nest outdoors, the Odorous House Ant will also nest indoors. If they do choose to create a home inside it is usually located in a wall or in a floor void. Pavement Ants almost exclusively nest outside. They get their name from their propensity to choose sidewalk cracks as a place to form their nest. Although pavement cracks might be the most common area, Pavement Ants will also nest under stones, logs, or patio blocks.

It may seem an odd way to distinguish between species, but stepping on an ant might be the quickest way to tell if you have an Odorous House Ant or a Pavement Ant. An Odorous House Ant has a very distinct smell when it is crushed. Many people say that the smell is very similar to a rotten coconut.

The other common ant in New Jersey is the Sugar Ant. They can be distinguished from the other two species because they are significantly smaller, about half the size of the other ants. Because Sugar Ants are a non-native species which originated in the tropics, they are very sensitive to cold temperatures. Their inability to handle the cold means they are almost exclusively going to nest inside a home. They prefer warm humid places with access to food so their nests are most often in or near kitchens.
There are steps you can take to help discourage ants from nesting or entering your home. Keeping all food in well-sealed containers is important. Sweeping up crumbs, no matter how small, is also necessary. Remember, the ants we are talking about are all less than a half inch long, even the smallest crumb can be a big meal. Ants are also attracted to sweet things, so make sure any juice or soda spills are wiped up immediately.

Even people with impeccable homes can have ants, so what do you do if you see an ant? There are plenty of home remedies to get rid of these pests but your best bet is to call Cowleys. Ant colonies can grow incredible quickly. They will even expand by creating additional colonies with their own queens. You may see one or two ants and then have a full blown infestation before you are able to locate the nest and get your home remedy to work.

World Pest Day
2023-06-14T00:00:00.05Z
Chris Dattoli
There are a lot of crazy holidays out there and at first glance you may think World Pest Day falls into that category, but upon a closer look, maybe it shouldn't.

There are a lot of crazy holidays out there and at first glance you may think World Pest Day falls into that category, but upon a closer look, maybe it shouldn’t. World Pest Day shares June 6th with a number of other holidays including National Applesauce Cake Day, National Cynthia Day, and National Yo-yo Day. (Who knew women named Cynthia needed their own special day?) So, why should we look at National Pest Day differently than these other obscure holidays? The most significant reason is that many people really don’t understand the importance of keeping pests out of their home, so having a day dedicated to getting the word out about pests might actually be beneficial.

As a community we commonly refer to mice, cockroaches, ticks, and other creatures as pests. According to Dictionary.com a pest is “a person or thing that annoys, esp by imposing itself when it is not wanted; nuisance.” While animal pests are obviously a nuisance, and are in places they don’t belong, there is something much more concerning about them; they are a health risk.

Everyone would agree that a mouse running across your kitchen floor during a party is embarrassing but in reality it is more than just your pride that can be hurt when pests are in your home. Did you know that mice can carry over 35 diseases? Some of these diseases can lead to long term health issues, and in some rare cases even death. Mice are not alone on the list of pests that can spread disease. From ticks that can give you Lyme to cockroaches that spread Salmonella, pests truly are a hazard.

Once you know that pests are more than just a nuisance you need to figure out how to keep them out of your house and away from your family. There are a couple of actions you can take that work well in keeping your home free from a variety of pests. Exclusion should be your first priority. Remember, for the most part pests are small, so closing up small openings into your house is key. Check your screens for tears to help reduce the chance of a number of pests like spiders and flies. Look for gaps or holes near your doors.

Did you know that a mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime? Another way to keep pests out is to destroy easy pathways into your home. Trees and shrubs that touch your roof or siding are like a highway into your home. These routes can be used by anything from ants to squirrels to help gain access. Keep greenery trimmed at least two feet from any structure.

Make your home inhospitable. Clean up crumbs and spills as quickly as possible. Even a small crumb can be a huge meal for and ant. Keep food in well-sealed containers. It may look beautiful to have your cookies sitting out on a platter, but that is an invitation to a variety of creatures. Pests also like access to water so make sure leaky pipes and faucets are fixed.

One of the easiest and most affective actions you can take is to call Cowleys. We will work with you to determine the best way to keep pests out of your home. Remember, less pests in a home means a healthier home!

Resurgence of Travel Brings Back Bed Bugs
2023-05-12T00:00:00.05Z
Bill Cowley
Unfortunately, with the resurgence in travel has come the resurgence of bed bugs. Keep these tips in mind when you travel this summer.

Kids are coming home from college, the end of the school year is right around the corner for younger ones, and people are starting to think about summer travel. At this time of year in 2016, 2017, and 2018 it seemed as though every newspaper across the country was reporting on the surge in bed bug cases. For years, people heard of the horror stories of bringing bed bugs home from vacation. Then, as the pandemic forced us all to completely stop travel, bed bugs seemed to disappear. Unfortunately, they didn’t really disappear, and with the resurgence in travel has come the resurgence of bed bugs. Keep these tips in mind when you travel this summer.

Before you leave consider the type of suitcase you will use. Hard sided suitcases provide the most protection from bed bugs, but for many of us it is simply not in our budget to buy new suitcases. Instead there is a quick, easy, and inexpensive trick: bring large trash bags with you. It may sound crazy, but if you place your suitcase in a large trash bag once you get to your destination, bed bugs will have a very difficult time catching a ride home with you.

Speaking of destinations, once you get to your destination, don’t unpack immediately. Many of us want to get settled as soon as we arrive, but your first step when you enter your hotel room or rented home should be to inspect for bed bugs. Before you even put your suitcase on the bed you should inspect the bed room. Although bed bugs can be found in a variety of places from sofas to rugs, the first place you really should look for a bed bug is, the bed. Start at the top of the bed and pull back the sheets so that the mattress is exposed. Do you see any small dark colored dots? A bed bug is described by many as looking like an apple seed. Bed bug excrement is often described as looking like pepper. If you see either of these things there is a very good chance that there is a bed bug infestation.

After your inspection, enjoy your vacation. If you inspected the area and didn’t find anything, your chance of bringing home bed bugs is slim, but it still exists. To even further decrease your chance of getting bed bugs there are a few steps you should take once you return from your trip. First, if you are able to leave you suitcase outside of your home in a protected area that is great. Take all of the clothes you brought with you (even if you didn’t wear them) and put them directly into the washing machine. Wash and dry your clothes at the highest temperature your clothes will allow. Vacuum your suitcase (paying special attention to the zippers) then throw the contents of the vacuum out in an outdoor trash bin.

Even if you have stayed in expensive accommodations and taken precautions once you got there, there is a slim chance that bed bugs could have traveled home with you. If this is the case, we at Cowleys can help! Taking care of the problem quickly and efficiently by using Cowleys will significantly decrease the chance of the problem growing out of hand.

Planting this Spring? Here Are a Few Plants you Should Consider

Did you know that the choices you make at the garden center can actually help or hurt your chances of having rodents in your home?

Spring is a time when our outside world comes alive. Seeing all the new buds on the trees sends many of us straight to our local garden center to buy flowers, plants, and herbs. Did you know that the choices you make at the garden center can actually help or hurt your chances of having rodents in your home? There are many different plants that can help keep rodents away but three of the best are lavender, chrysanthemums, and mint.

Lavender is a small evergreen shrub with thin gray-green leaves but its most distinguishing feature is its stunning small purple flowers. Not only does lavender bring beautiful color to gardens, but it has a scent that people have sought out for generations as an elixir to instill calm. In fact, according to the Harlem Candle Company, lavender was the third most popular scent of 2022. Lavender is very popular with people, not with rodents. In fact, rodents find the smell so repugnant that it is actually used as a natural rodent repellent.
Planting lavender around your home should deter rodents. For added benefit, you can cut sprigs from the lavender you plant, dry it and then fill sachets with the lavender. Placing these sachets around your house will both smell nice as well as give an added incentive for rodents to stay away.

Another colorful plant that rodents hate is the chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum, which are commonly referred to as mums, come in a variety of different colors and sizes. The immense variety means that you are bound to find something that fits your color tastes. When it comes to deterring rodents, chrysanthemums are great because they bloom in the fall when mice like to enter your home.
There is one very important caveat to planting chrysanthemums in your garden, they are known to be toxic to both dogs and cats. If eaten they can cause diarrhea, vomiting, excessive drooling, and more. If you plant these beautiful flowers, make sure to do so in an area that cannot be accessed by your pets. If you are concerned that your pets could get to them, although they are beautiful, you may wish to keep chrysanthemums off your garden store list.

Lastly, you should consider planting mint. Mint is a perennial herb so you may only have to purchase it once from the garden center. Mint comes in many varieties with a number of different scents and flower colors. One common trait among all mint plants is their square stem. You should choose the mint that you like best, but if you like them all you may want to go with peppermint and spearmint because they are thought to be the best plants to repel rodents. Like lavender, mint can be dried and used around the house. It can also be cut and used fresh in teas or other drinks. A word of caution when planting mint, it spreads easily so you may want to plant it in pots to keep it contained.

Using these plants can be very helpful in keeping rodents out of your home. If mice or rats still find a way in, call Cowleys quickly before a few rodents become an infestation.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has declared October 16-22, 2022, as Rodent Awareness Week, an annual observance recognized by Chase’s Calendar of Events to promote greater awareness about the threats rodents pose to health and property. When cooler weather arrives, rodents will seek out shelter for warmth and a new food source. Chances are, they could have their sights set on your home. Cowleys Pest Services, with the help of NPMA, has helpful prevention tips to avoid any intruders this fall as well as fun facts about mice and rats.

“Every year, an estimated 21 million U.S. homes are invaded by rodents according to NPMA,” said Bill Cowley. “Not only can rats and mice spread bacteria and diseases, but they can cause damage to your home as they chew through drywall and even electrical wiring. To prevent these pests, it is important to seal up any holes that allow entry to your home. This includes openings as small as a dime. Additionally, ensure all garbage is sealed properly and food is stored in airtight containers.”

This Rodent Awareness Week, Cowleys is sharing some fun facts about rats and mice:

Rats can fit through openings the size of a quarter while mice can squeeze through openings the size of a dime.

These pests are known to transmit over 35 diseases including Salmonella, hantavirus and the plague.

Mice can drop up to 25,000 fecal pellets every year, an estimated 70 times per day.

A female house mouse can give birth to a half dozen babies every three weeks and up to 35 young each year.

The Norway rat is believed to be of Asian origin, arriving in the U.S. on ships from other countries in the 1700s.

Roof rats are primarily nocturnal.

Despite cooler temperatures, pests will still be out and about!

Invasive species are a concern to experts across the nation, as more of them are popping up in the United States and wreaking havoc. While not all of them pose a threat, some of them can cause significant damage to homes or crops and can potentially impact your health. Many homeowners might think that a drop in temperatures means pests are on their way out, but Cowleys Pest Services, in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, warns it isn’t true. Some pests, including invasive species, will stick around for a few more weeks.

Depending on where you live, you could find various invasive species in your backyard. Spotted lanternflies and stink bugs are two newer invasive pests not known for any health threats, while pests like Asian tiger mosquitoes and red imported fire ants could inflict bites and stings. Formosan termites are a structural concern as they are known to be the most aggressive termite species.

“Mosquitoes, such as the Asian tiger mosquito, will stick around until temperatures dip below 50 degrees,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner at Cowleys Pest Services. “Stink bugs and spotted lanternflies will be around until October or November, depending on the temperature. Overall, the message is that invasive species and other pests can still be a concern well into the fall.”

While summer brings warm weather, BBQs and trips to the beach, it also is peak season for mosquitoes. Known as the deadliest animal in the world, mosquitoes are capable of transmitting diseases that can cause severe health problems and even death. Cowleys, in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, is sharing information about this insect and the diseases it can transmit.

“West Nile virus, dengue fever and eastern equine encephalitis are all diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in the U.S.,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner at Cowleys Pest Services. “Globally, malaria and yellow fever are a concern, especially in areas with limited healthcare resources. Reactions to these diseases vary depending on the person affected, but in some cases can be fatal. If you’re planning on spending time outside this summer, it is important to protect yourself from mosquito bites.”

Studies have shown that mosquitoes can be attracted to different people for a variety of reasons, including the color of their clothing and if they are wearing perfume or cologne. Additionally, blood type and body temperature could impact whether you’re bitten.

To keep yourself protected from mosquitoes this summer, NPMA recommends the following:

Properly apply insect repellent containing at least 20 percent DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus; follow label instructions closely and reapply as needed

Wear closed-toe shoes, long pants and long sleeve shirts when spending time outdoors to limit skin exposure

Avoid wearing dark colors, floral prints and sweet-smelling perfumes and colognes while outside

Avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active

We warning travelers to keep an eye out for signs of this hitchhiking pest during Bed Bug Awareness Week.

Here\'s How to Prevent a Bed Bug Bite this Summer - Image 1" width="380" height="253" />

The arrival of summer usually means the beginning of vacation season. As many Americans load up their cars and hit the road of a well-needed getaway, it’s likely bed bugs are not top of mind. No matter where you are staying, bed bugs could be hiding out waiting to cause disruption to your travels and use you as their next blood meal. This Bed Bug Awareness Week, June 5-11, Cowleys is teaming up with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) to share tips on how to inspect your hotel or lodging facility for signs of bed bugs.

“The whole point of a vacation is to get away and relax without any stress,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner at Cowleys Pest Services. “Unfortunately, there is always the chance for a bump in the road along the way, one of which could be bed bugs. These tricky little pests are often overlooked until it is too late. Their bites can be a damper on any holiday fun and they are known for their ability to hitchhike on your belongings, which can end in an infestation at home.”

From a five-star resort to an Airbnb, bed bugs can be found anywhere. Luckily for travelers, run-ins with this pest can be prevented in just a few steps. Below are some tips recommended by Cowleys to keep your vacation bed bug-free:

Pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams, particularly at the corners, for red or brown stains and spots.

Thoroughly inspect the entire room before unpacking, including behind the headboard and in sofas/chairs.

Keep your suitcase in the hall or right inside the door away from where any bed bugs could be.

Carry a small flashlight or use your phone flashlight to assist you with visual inspections.

If you spot a bed bug or any of the signs of bed bugs, alert staff and change rooms immediately. Do not stay in a room adjacent to the infested room.

Ticks might be small, but they pose a big threat to your health. In fact, the CDC estimates approximately 476,000 people may get Lyme disease in the United States every year. To keep the public safe, Cowleys is working with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) to share helpful information about ticks and tick prevention during the second Tick Awareness Week, an observance recognized by Chase’s Calendar of Events happening May 8-14, 2022.

“We’re excited to be joining the NPMA to help spread awareness about threat of a tick bite,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner at Cowleys Pest Services. “A bite from a tick can be serious, as this pest can transmit diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and others to humans. To prevent exposure, it is important to wear insect repellent with at least 20 percent DEET and avoid grassy habitats where ticks are known to live. You can also keep yourself protected by wearing long sleeves and pants.”

If you are bitten by a tick, remain calm and remove it immediately. To do so, Cowleys and the NPMA recommend following these easy steps:

Gently pull back any hair from around the tick, exposing the skin near the tick/bite.

Locate the head of the tick, grasp it as close to the skin as possible using fine-tipped tweezers and gently squeeze. Do not grab the tick’s body, as this can increase the chance of injecting the tick’s blood into the skin.

Pull outward in a straight motion until the pressure pulls out the head of the tick. Do not twist or wiggle the tick, as that may tear the head off, leaving it lodged in the skin.

Once removed, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water. You can also use rubbing alcohol or an iodine scrub.

Ticks should then be flushed down a toilet or wrapped tightly in tissue before disposing in a closed receptacle. Do not try and crush them.

After removing a tick, monitor symptoms and call a doctor immediately if you develop a rash or a fever.

Cowleys Pest Services is recognizing the role of pest control professionals in protecting public health this April

Throughout April, Cowleys Pest Services is joining others in the professional pest control industry to celebrate National Pest Management Month (NPMM), an annual observance recognized by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and Chase’s Calendar of Events. Every year, NPMM highlights the vital role pest control professionals have in protecting public health, food and property from threats posed by pests.

“Pests such as rodents, mosquitoes and cockroaches can transmit serious diseases to humans while termites can cause costly damage to homes and other property,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner at Cowleys Pest Services. “These are just a few examples of the pests that are known to infest homes. Every day, pest control professionals are using their knowledge and expertise to help keep the public protected from the threats posed by infestations. It’s important for Cowleys Pest Services to recognize them for what they do.”

Now that spring has sprung, homeowners can expect an influx in pest pressure. The experts at NPMA and Cowleys recommend the following to prevent pests this year:

Eliminate sources of standing water around the structure and clean clogged gutters to help reduce moisture.

Seal any cracks on the exterior of the structure with a silicone-based caulk, paying close attention to where utilities and pipes enter.

Keep mulch at least 15 inches from the foundation and keep tree branches and shrubbery trimmed back and away from the structure.

Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around the foundation and windows.

Keep basements, attics and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry to avoid moisture buildup.

During the month of February, many people are looking to shower their loved ones with flowers and romantic gestures, and so are pests! With a name like “kissing bug”, you’d expect this pest to be the official mascot of Valentine’s Day. However, this insect is the complete opposite of Cupid. Cowleys, in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, is sharing information about this insect and why it could be a threat to you and your loved one’s health.

“Known for biting humans on and around the mouth, this pest is definitely not one you should try smooching,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner of Cowleys Pest Services. “Kissing bugs carry a parasite known to cause Chagas disease. This illness causes flu-like symptoms and a rash around the area where the parasite entered the body, but sometimes more complicated issues can develop including cardiac and intestinal problems.”

Most who are bitten by a kissing bug don’t recall the bite and few show any reaction. Those with sensitive skin or allergic reactions to the bug’s saliva may exhibit minor symptoms. While kissing bugs can be found in the southern United States, fortunately, cases of Chagas disease is rare. Approximately 300,000 people in the United States are infected with the parasite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To prevent exposure to this pest, practice proper pest prevention around the home. Seal cracks and holes that offer entry indoors, replace weather-stripping, and repair loose mortar around the basement and windows.

If you suspect a pest infestation of any kind, call us for an inspection.

“Just the sight of a rodent can be startling, but these pests are also responsible for spreading disease and causing property damage,” said Drew Cowley, Founder & Co-Owner of Cowleys Pest Services. “Mice and rats can spread salmonella, rat bite fever, hantavirus and even trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks. They are also known to gnaw through building materials like pipes and drywall, which poses an unwelcome surprise for any homeowner. In addition to your home, your vehicle offers rodents an ideal place to build a nest and a meal. Rodents are known to gnaw on electrical wiring, causing thousands of dollars in damage.”

“House mice are the most common sources of a rodent infestation. There are a few ways you can tell if your home has been infested with house mice. Be sure to keep an eye out for gnaw marks, droppings, tracks, and the smell of their urine.”

To prevent rodents from accessing your home this winter, Cowleys and the NPMA recommend following these best practices:

Seal any exterior holes or cracks larger than a dime with silicone caulk.

Ensure all windows and vents are properly screened.

Keep trees and shrubs trimmed away from the home.

Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.

Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the building.

While pests such as cockroaches, rodents, and stinging insects are usually the species of concern for homeowners, it’s important to keep in mind that there are also invasive pests making their way across the U.S. wreaking havoc on their new environments. Cowleys, in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, is sharing information about the top invasive species that could be found both indoors and out this year. While not all residents in the U.S. are battling these pests, it’s possible they can continue their invasion across the country in left uncontrolled.

“Invasive species cause a big concern as they arrive in the U.S. with no known predators and little information about them,” said Bill Cowley, Co-Owner of Cowleys Pest Services. “While public awareness is necessary to help stop the spread of these species, there is only so much that can be done once they have taken up residence here. Because most invasive species cause a negative impact wherever they end up, it’s important for homeowners to take action immediately.”

Cowleys Pest Services, and the NPMAare sharing information about the invasive species you could spot this season:

Spotted lanternflies are a threat to agriculture in the Northeast as this pest feeds on the sap within many trees and plants. Initially reported in Pennsylvania in 2014, it has made its way to several states. Remove spotted lanternflies immediately by scraping the egg sacs into a plastic bag and disposing of them.

Stink bugs were first discovered in the U.S. in 1996. This pest is native to Asia and, while it poses no health threat to humans, it is known for the odor it emits when crushed. Stink bugs can be found in the Eastern half of the U.S., as well as California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. To prevent them, patch holes in screen doors and windows.

Asian longhorned ticks became a concerning threat after being found in New Jersey in 2017. Since then, it has been discovered that this species can reproduce without a mate and transmit diseases to humans and animals. According to the CDC, Asian long-horned ticks are found in 16 states from New York down to South Carolina and from the Mid-Atlantic, west to Missouri. It is the first invasive tick to become established in the U.S. in fifty years. Avoid encounters with all ticks by wearing appropriate clothing, insect repellent with at least 20 percent DEET, and by conducting tick checks.

Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) are an ant species native to Brazil first discovered in Alabama in 1933. Now found in Southern and Western states, this ant will attack anything that disturbs its nest, making it important to work with a licensed pest control professional to remove their mounds.

I informed the homeowner what I found and advised her to prevent any future pest issues, she needs to get the skylight repaired ASAP. I was happy to hear that she will call her brother-in-law, who is a roofer, to fix that area. Now to get rid of the ants!

I treated the roof area and inside the bathroom with a non-repellent residual and an ant gel bait. The ants will come in contact with either of these products and transfer them throughout their colony, which will rapidly eliminate them.

After this homeowner in Neptune, NJ noticed several ants emerging out of the skylight in her bathroom, she called our office and I was sent out to investigate.

When I arrived, I inspected the bathroom and found a long trail of odorous house ants trailing from the exhaust fan and the skylight. Odorous house ants are small, fast ants that give off a rotten coconut smell when they’re crushed or startled. I decided to do some additional detective work and inspect the roof area above the bathroom. Good thing I did, because I found the main colony of odorous house ants nesting underneath a portion of the skylight that was severely water damaged.

Odorous house ants, as well as all ants, enter homes in search of two things: food and moisture. The moisture-damaged skylight and all the leaf debris on the roof were creating the perfect harborage areas for the ants.

We treated the nest with a knockdown dust application which eliminates the wasps almost immediately. After several minutes, we carefully removed the nest and properly disposed of it. Finally, we applied a non-repellent residual product along with the fascia board as well as the entire roofline. This will prevent any future stinging insects from building a nest on the home.

A new customer of Cowley's in Rumson, NJ called our office after discovering a few wasps hovering around the back area of his home. Once we arrived, we inspected the area in question and noticed some staining along with the fascia board above the back doors. Upon further inspection, we found a large wasps nest in the gap between the fascia board and siding.
Wasps will make a nest just about anywhere around your property, including your house. Taking a moment to check and see if there are any wasps, bees, or hornets flying around a specific part of your home is a good indication that there may be nesting somewhere inside your home. Always take note of the location of where the activity is seen and avoid messing with the nest itself or else you could get seriously injured.

I applied both a liquid application and granular bait treatment throughout the crawl space. I also sprayed the block wall and sill plate to prevent the crickets from possibly entering the home through any small gaps around the wire and pipe chases, and I placed more granular bait around the base of the foundation wall. Both of these applications will eliminate the camel crickets almost immediately. I also placed several glue monitor traps throughout the crawl space to monitor the infestation for when I return for a follow-up visit.

As I made my way down, I was greeted by a massive infestation of camel crickets!

Everyone knows camel crickets, they just don't know that's what they're called. Many people refer to them as "sprickets" (a terrifying combination of acricket and a spider) because when you approach them, they jump right at you! A fun fact is that these nightmare fueled pests aren't arachnids. They get their name from their humpbacked appearance, which resembles a camel and is found in the damp, cool areas of your home, usually a basement or crawl space.

As the manager and his staff started cleaning, I turned my attention to eliminating the drain flies. I grabbed my heavy-duty cleaning brush and scrubbed every single drain throughout the kitchen, dish washing area, and garbage room. Afterward, I treated the drains with a liquid application. This application removes the bad bacteria from the drain, which is the foundation for a drain fly's breeding ground. Once that is removed, so are the drain flies.

Lastly, I applied a bio-foam solution that removes the organic build-up, odors, and scum inside the drains. Now that every single drain has been treated efficiently and a new cleaning protocol has been instituted, drain flies will no longer be a cause of concern for this manager.

Recently, I went out on a service call for a new commercial account, a senior living facility in Brick, NJ. The owner reported seeing multiple flies throughout the kitchen area. Once I arrived I began inspecting and noticed a particular drain filled with garbage and food. As I took a closer look, I was greeted by several drain flies.

Drain flies, also called sewer or moth flies, are non-biting gnats that can live almost anywhere that water accumulates for a week or more. Their identifying trait is that their wings are covered with scales and they disappear in a cloud of dust when they are crushed. They breed in the organic slime that builds up inside drains.

As I continued inspecting, I noticed several more drains that were also filled with food and other garbage. I brought these issues up to the manager and told him that proper sanitation is the best way to eliminate the drain flies and prevent them from coming back. I suggested a few different cleaning protocols to implement, to which he agreed and immediately started cleaning the kitchen.

In order to safely capture the beaver, we broke apart a few areas of the dam in order to release the water flow to a few areas and then set up a trap nearby. When the beaver returns to repair the damaged areas, in no time at all, it will be safely captured in the trap.

Every single beaver removal job conducted by Cowleys trained professionals are done so by a federal permit issued by the Fish and Game Administration. This permit informs us exactly what type of traps we are allowed to use and how we can catch and remove the beaver.

I went out on a service call for a new commercial client in Wanaque, NJ who was having an issue with beavers. Once I arrived and began inspecting the property, I found the beavers swimming in the water and located the dam they had built. Their dam was about 20 feet across. In most extreme cases, a beavers dam can be over 100 yards across and about 4 feet wide.

Beavers are large rodents that are herbivores that prefer to eat leaves, bark, twigs, roots, and aquatic plants. They are excellent swimmers and once a pair of beavers settle into an area, they build a lodge made of sticks and mud and build a dam, which is exactly what they did on this property! Although a beavers dam is beneficial to the environment, when they exist on people's properties they can cause extensive damage to yards and homes. Beavers take down trees to build their dams, resulting in loss of costly landscaping plants as well as potential falling tree damage to buildings. Here, in this case, the build-up of water starting flowing towards people's homes, causing a severe flood hazard.

A resident in Middletown, NJ called our office after finding multiple dug up holes throughout his front yard. The female cicada killer wasps will paralyze a cicada with her venomous stinger, carry the cicada to its burrow, and lay its egg underneath the wing of the cicada. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae begin to eat the paralyzed cicada alive.

Territorial Yellowjackets in Holmdel, NJ

This is what we consider a very serious situation that needs to be addressed immediately. There are several ways to remedy the situation but I decided to go with a dust application. The reason that I chose to dust the area is that I don’t know what exactly is going on up inside the soffit. By using the dust I’m able to get the product to where I can see. By placing the tip of the duster into the entrance and pulling the string the dust will expand and find the nest as well as the surrounding areas where the yellow jackets are building.

Within five days for yellowjacket activity will be completely eliminated in the area will be safe. The client was extremely satisfied and grateful that we were able to get there so quickly to take care of the problem.

Yellowjackets are very territorial and will let you know if you were getting too close to their nest. Unfortunately, one of our new clients in Holmdel, NJ, found that out the hard way. As I began inspecting the area, I found a yellowjackets nest in the corner of the soffit by the front door.

Yellowjackets are social insects that have annual colonies; only the queen lives through winter to start a new colony in the spring. Common places for a nest are attached to bushes, trees, or the eaves of homes. Yellowjacket nests are built with a recognizable paper-like material made from chewed cellulose. Their diet consists of sugary substances such as flower nectar, fruit, and the occasional soda when they find an open can. What makes yellowjackets unique is that they consume protein in their larval stage.

If the entrance to a yellowjackets nest is approached, they will become very aggressive. They can sting multiple times, and their stings can be very painful. People who are allergic to their venom could have a severe reaction, and it is possible to become hypersensitive to yellowjackets after being stung. This sensitivity could cause a serious problem if stung again in the future.

We decided that dusting the yellow jackets nest would be the best course of action for this particular situation. We put a bee suit on and made our way towards the very active yellow jackets nest. We applied the dust into the nest and the yellow jackets began flying out by the hundreds. Anytime a dust product touches the entrance or the nest itself the yellow jackets begin cleaning it out immediately to protect their queen. Little do they know, they are carrying out what will eventually kill them.

Over the course of the next 24 hours, the bees will expire due to the intense cleaning of the dust that will be absorbed into their bodies. We always advise our clients to stay away from the area for 72 hours if at all possible. We do not want to take any chances when it comes to the safety of our clients.

When the weather is perfect picking vegetables, it’s also perfect for yellowjackets to be very active. Unfortunately for our newest client in Manasquan, NJ she had to find that out for herself. While she was picking vegetables in her garden she stepped on a ground yellowjackets nest and out they came! She was stung several times on her feet which for her meant a lot of swelling.

Yellowjackets thrive when the temperatures are hot in the Northeast. They’re also very active pollinating and living off of the goods that can be found in the garden. Since yellowjackets don’t lose their stinger, they can sting numerous times, and will do so unprovoked. They usually bite your flesh to get a better grip as they jab their stinger into your skin.

After completing our inspection, we determined that the best solution is to install a shock track system around the perimeter of the roof. The shock track system emits an electric shock that doesn't harm the birds but scares them. Once the birds land on it, the track shocks their feet and the birds no longer perch and roost on the roof.

Another beneficial part of the shock track system is that it is powered by a solar-power battery box. Meaning it is a green alternative to safely prevent birds from roosting. Now the homeowner will no longer worry about pesky birds defecating all over his brand new roof.

A homeowner in Jackson, NJ was having an issue with birds roosting on his roof. Normally, he wouldn't mind a few birds on his roof, but the main issue was that the birds were pooping all over his brand new roof and damaging it! Frustrated, he contacted Cowleys to help remedy his bird problem.

As soon as I began inspecting the roof, I immediately saw how bad the bird poop was. Fortunately, the birds didn't make it into the homeowner's attic. Aside from making your roof look disgusting, bird droppings can cause some serious issues to your roof. Bird poop contains uric acid (that's the white liquid goo part of bird poop) because birds don't urinate to release nitrogenous waste from their blood. The acid dissolves the asphalt in the shingles, which causes the protective granules to wash off of the roof. Without this layer of protection, additional bird poop will eat away at the shingles until they provided absolutely no protection from the rain and snow, which will lead to roof leaks.

For treatment, we applied a liquid residual along the entire exterior of the home, the cracks, crevices, and baseboards in the living room, and the surrounding rooms. I also applied a granular bait along the vegetation on the exterior of the home. This application is a non-repellant, so the ants will unknowingly come in contact with it. The odorous house ants then transfer both the application and the granular bait with the other ants in the colony, including the queen. Within a few short weeks, the entire colony is eliminated and the home will be free of these stinky ants.

Odorous house ants tend to invade homes after heavy rainfall. What Your Crawl Space Might Say About the Rest of Your Home
2024-01-25T00:00:00.05Z
Dave Hoskin
A crawl space is arguably the most overlooked room in your house.

A crawl space is arguably the most overlooked room in your house. Perhaps it is used for extra storage or maybe you avoid it at all costs if it is musty, damp, and even wet. What homeowners don’t realize is that problems that they may be experiencing in others areas of the house or possibly even health conditions suffered by those that live in the home could be caused by what’s happening in their crawl space.

Older homes and old school builders used vented dirt-floor crawl spaces when building homes. This type of construction is now considered inefficient and ineffective. However, regardless of the age of your home, you may still have a dirt-floored, vented crawl space because they are still permitted.

Poorly designed, vented crawl spaces contribute to many problems throughout the structure. If you are experiencing some of the following problems it could be due to a poorly designed crawl space:

Damp, wet, or even flooded crawl spaces

Musty or mildew odors in the crawl space and even throughout the rest of the house

A lot of pest problems, especially ants, termites, camel crickets

Wildlife infestations in the crawl space

Peeling paint on the outside of the home

High humidity throughout the home

Drafty, cold first floors

High radon levels in the home

Those in the home suffer from chronic allergies or asthma

Poor air quality

Mold and mildew growth in the crawl space or basement

Experts agree that up to 40% of the air we breathe comes up through the crawl space. If your crawl space is an uninviting, damp and musty area it could be leading to poor air quality and unhealthy conditions throughout your home. Scientists refer to how the air flows through a home as “The Stack Effect”. Air is sucked up from the ground and into a house through the basement or crawl space. Indoor conditions cause it to continue to move up through the home, working much like a chimney does. Moisture and humidity present in your crawlspace allow mold and mildew growth. This damp, polluted air is then drawn up and into other areas of your home posing a threat to its structure, leading to expensive but necessary repairs and causing unhealthy living conditions.

The good news is there are solutions to your crawl space problems. It is possible to turn your damp, musty crawl space into a clean, dry space where mold and mildew cannot grow thus improving the conditions throughout your home and making the air you are breathing healthy again.
