If you or your family travel frequently and stay in a number of hotels or motels, be on the lookout for bed bugs. Over 75% of bed bug infestation originate from hotels and motels, according to the National Pest Management Association. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
Put Your Luggage in the Tub - As soon as you enter your hotel room, place the luggage into the bathtub. Bed bugs have a difficult time traveling on tile and are unlikely to reside in the bathroom.
Inspect the Corners - Pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams, particularly the corners. Bed bugs live in tight space where they can feel pressure on both sides of their body.
Don't Bring the Luggage Inside - Once you're home, leave your luggage in the garage or on a tile floor in the laundry room. Carefully take the items out, inspect them, immediately throw all clothes into the wash and dry them on the highest heat setting. Then steam clean your luggage — this will eliminate any bed bug eggs.
It's important that you take some precautions to ensure that your room is bed-bug free before you settle in. Of course, if you DO wind up with bed bugs hitchhiking into your home, we're a phone call away.
